Sen. John McCain cautioned Tuesday that President Donald Trump should not threaten North Korea if he was not prepared to act.
"I take exception to the president's comments, because you got to be sure you can do what you say you're going to do," the Arizona Republican told "The Mac & Gaydos Show" on KTAR-FM in Phoenix.
President Trump told reporters in New Jersey that further threats from Pyongyang would be "met with fire and fury like the world has never seen."
"North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States," Trump said. "They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.
"He has been very threatening beyond a normal statement," the president said.
"And, as I said, they will be met with fire, fury, and, frankly, power the likes of which the world has never seen before."
McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said Trump was best to follow the adage of former President Teddy Roosevelt: "Speak softly and carry a big stick."
"The great leaders I've seen don't threaten unless they're ready to act," the senator said, "and I'm not sure President Trump is ready to act.
"It's not terrible in what he said," McCain continued. "It's the classic Trump in that he overstates things."
However, McCain said he did not believe North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un was ready for actual war.
"I think the rotund ruler in Pyongyang is crazy, but he's not ready to go to the brink," he said.
Still, Un should be taken seriously in light of reports North Korea has developed mini nuclear warheads that could be placed within intercontinental ballistic missiles.

F John McCain .die already
I think that HVAC and flooring overhaul may take care of some of those “leaks”.
Just ask Bronco if you can find him.
Thanks, Democrat John.
Anything else you’d like to try and mess up today, big mouth?
“War is viagra for McCain. Cindy should watch out tonight.”
I don’t think Cindy has had to watch out for anything for quite some time.
An aphrodisiac.
This is true, but we already know it. We don’t need McCain to point it out. John M. remains consistent, and wants to draw more attention to himself. He wants to set the mood as though President Trump is now concerned with doing something to keep John McCain happy. I tend to think the White House may have other priorities at this time. Most that have nothing to do with McCain’s level of ‘happiness’.
I hope Trump nukes McShamey, the lying traitorous coward
Did anyone ever find out how many IQ points that tumor added?
I don’t hate many people, but I do hate that man. That’s all I can say on this forum.
Very good point.
As if DJT will take advice from a traitor and epic loser with a defective brain.
McCain views himself as the wise, default adult since Trump became president.
What John/traitor you and your ilk cannot make any money from a short engagement with NK?
John McPain should shut his stinking pie hole, crawl off somewhere and finish up the time he has left in this life without fowling up our country any more then what he already has.... This guy is like a foot disease...he just won't go away...
His brain tumor is telling him he’s the President.
This idiot has become an ankle biter and a constant irritant.
Has McCain forgotten that he wasn’t elected president but Trump was?
The do-nothing republican senate is an embarrassment.
McCain should stick with the job he was elected to do and let President Trump do his job without McCain’s constant ankle biting.
In Oregon he could legally check out.
Road trip!
