I thought the song was about a Wichita Indian who played offensive tackle ("drive the main roads") for a community college football team ("the county"). He could hear his girlfriend cheering for him even though the rest of the crowd was booing ("hear you through the whine") and was musing about an upcoming home game against a team with a pass-oriented offense ("that stretch down south").
