That German was partially correct and partially wrong.He/she was wrong in that Americans aren't too lazy to learn a second language...it's that we don't *need* to.English is,today,the most important language on earth...BY FAR.
OTOH,he/she was correct to suggest that Europeans tend to learn more than one (one almost always being English) because it's a small continent featuring a number of fairly important languages...*including English*.
A hundred years from now Chinese may well be the world's most important language...but today it's ENGLISH!

Yup...we went to Kenya a few years ago to visit several National Parks.Everywhere we went we found native Kenyans with a strong...in fact,usually flawless...command of English.Didn't encounter much Swahili except "jambo" (hello).
You are correct that we have gone nuts adding Spanish to everything but this is hardly the only case of liberalism gone crazy.
Need to put a halt on all that stuff. Learning other languages is wonderful - I speak reasonable Russian and French with bits of several other languages - but accommodating other languages to the point that every instruction sheet has to either stupidly multilingual or just a cartoon with pictures and no words is ridiculous.
Let me see:
Chinese speak English pretty well, are they white? No. Same for most immigrants from India, Philippines, South Korea and Japan. Are they all “white” too? Many African immigrants come from countries - like Kenya (and nine other Sub-Saharan African countries) where English is commonly spoken. Are they “white” also?
When was America White only?
They were conservative and Republican. They weren't unskilled mulatto layabouts waiting for EBT and Section 8.
Why should I press 1 for English? I don’t get to press 4 for Italian or 5 for Welsh. How about 699 for Alabama (the language of the Alabama tribe).

I have absolutely no problem with making it English only. I’ve seen the costly errors that happened in Canada with the dual language issues, and none of them are good.

No one was rude or anything like that, just not fluent in English and my last Spanish class was 6th grade!
CA is very much the same in that people there exist in barios, even though many work in hotels, hospitals, and national chains while living in this country for 25-30 years with no working knowledge of English.......and even suggesting they do, if only to better themselves, is faced with screams of "racism!"
I responded to another female "gringo" who claimed I was racist (at a loud volume, btw) the people from Spanish speaking backgrounds are mostly white not black. This shrew yelled back that, "well they're not white either."
This was not an ignorant woman either, advanced degree - just stupid!

Real simple, English is the language of MONEY. You want it, you learn it.
A couple of weeks ago I was traveling with a young lady from the Netherlands. I thought she was American, east coast, at first, her English and accent were so good. She had only been in Canada for a month and just arrived in America for the first time.
My response to that, and I have used it, is that Europe is so fragmented, they HAVE to learn another language. I tell 'em that I can go 3,000 miles coast to coast or 1,500 miles north and south and still be within one country, thus no need for another language. Try that in Europe.
And, English is the new Lingua Franca today and any foreigner would be foolish not to learn it.
