THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

GEORGE GERSHWIN

A DAMSEL IN DISTRESS

MEL TORME: “NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT”

The Velvet Fog tackled this song in 1956, and his jazz version backed by Marty Paich is exceptional.

FRANK SINATRA: “NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT”

This is Frank teamed with Nelson Riddle during the later Capitol years.

This is Frank teamed with Count Basie in a Neal Hefti arrangement, and it’s a completely different take on the song.

Frank and Peggy Lee had a close working relationship and a friendship that lasted decades. This video is from a TV broadcast. Note that this is yet another different take on the song.

ELLA FITZGERALD: “NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT”

Ella’s version is backed by Nelson Riddle, a sweet orchestral arrangement.

Ella Fitzgerald: “Nice Work If You Can Get It” (1959)

This is Ella live at a nightclub in Chicago with a small jazz combo backing her, and it beats her version with Riddle hands down.

Ella Fitzgerald: “Nice Work If You Can Get It” (1958)

The great ones never do it the same way twice. This live recording features her backed only by Ellis Larkins on piano. She scats her way in the middle.

Thank you...they are really needed. Today has been a rough day and Suzye is here. 2 of us and she’s mad at both of us. I finally had to text my sister to call and help out.

She wants to go Home. And part of her anger is that she is still here.

THELONIUS MONK: “NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT”

In this 1964 recording, the left hand is stride piano, and the right hand is pure Monk. It’s this kind of jazz treatment that qualifies a song for entry into the songbook.

Tune in next Friday for more George Gershwin and the Great American Songbook.
