Attorney General Jeff Sessions to hold news conference on leak investigations Friday
CBS News ^

Posted on 08/04/2017 3:32:48 AM PDT by bryan999

Attorney General Jeff Sessions will hold a press conference announcing on-going leak investigations on Friday.

The investigations into various government leaks have "been in the works for some time," an official familiar with the matter told CBS News' Paula Reid.

It is expected that leaks related to the Manchester terror attack will be part of the Justice Department's investigation, as well as other leaks of sensitive information to the media.

Sessions recently faced criticism from President Trump for not being "tougher on the leaks from the intelligence agencies."

While it is atypical for the Department of Justice to announce investigations, the attorney general issued a statement in May hinting at potential leak investigations.

"These leaks cannot be tolerated and we will make every effort to put an end to it," Sessions' statement reads, referencing the Manchester terror attack leaks. "We have already initiated appropriate steps to address these rampant leaks that undermine our national security."

Feckless. Not a single arrest of a White House leaker. Not a single arrest of any other executive branch leaker such as in DOJ, State, DOD, or intelligence community.

From the text of the Sessions press briefing:

"While the Department of Justice does not discuss ongoing investigations or confirm specific matters, it is important for the American people—and for those who might be thinking about leaking sensitive or classified information—to know that criminals who would illegally use their access to our most sensitive information to endanger our national security are, in fact, being investigated and prosecuted. Since January, the Department has more than tripled the number of active leak investigations compared to the number pending at the end of the last Administration. And we have already charged four people with unlawfully disclosing classified material or with concealing contacts with foreign intelligence officers.

“people who are complaining that Sessions is doing nothing about whatever, that we have NO WAY of knowing what the Justice Department is really up to until indictments are handed down”

Oh yeah, the old “If you only knew what we were doing for you, but of course, its all secret” trick. LOL

“Zer0 set up the federal intelligence system to store every electronic communication in America in a data base.”

That would be good old NWO globalist George Bush.

Third, as I said, we tripled the number of active leak investigations. In response, the FBI has increased resources devoted to leak cases and created a new counterintelligence unit to manage these cases. Simultaneously, the Department is reviewing policies that impact leak investigations.

I have listened to career investigators and prosecutors about how to most successfully investigate and prosecute these matters. At their suggestion, one of the things we are doing is reviewing policies affecting media subpoenas. We respect the important role that the press plays and will give them respect, but it is not unlimited. They cannot place lives at risk with impunity. We must balance their role with protecting our national security and the lives of those who serve in our intelligence community, the armed forces, and all law abiding Americans.

Sessions is not the problem. He didn’t fire Comey or say that the real reason he was fired was due to his hanlding of the Russia investigation. He didn’t have a meeting with a Russian lawyer claiming she was bringing information helpful to the campaign from the Russian government. He didn’t hire Manafort who had close dealings with Ukraine. Or include Carter Page on the campaign team despite his close dealings with the Russians over many years and that we now learn had a FISA warrant against him in 2014. Jerk
Sessions recused himself due to the recommendation from the DOJ Ethics office that recusal was in accord with DOJ policy. Giuliai said he would have recused himself under the circumstances.

Don’t be a never trump tool, FRiend. You are better than that.

Democrats and GOPe do that type of stuff x 100. Every day of the year. You really think Hillary didn’t give any meetings for that $145 million in cash she got for ONE Russia linked deal? And where is the special prosecutor for Hillary?

The GOPe is busy trying to obstruct the Trump agenda. Don’t buy the garbage they are selling if you care about any item on his agenda.

WHOA! They tripled the number of investigations!!

Investigations mean nothing. Arrests do. No results and there never will be. Feckless, impotent, Prosecutorial ED.
We also had GOP lead investigations of IRS gate felonies, of Hillarys felonies, of fast and furious flooding the cartels with weapons, of Benghazi, etc.

I heard a lot of hot air. Two barking dogs that will never bite. All sizzle and no steak.

Aug 3 - Now Mueller will have the power to issue subpoenas for documents — the president’s long-withheld tax returns, for instance

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/politics-government/congress/article165350262.html

This is far outside the scope of his authorization. https://www.justice.gov/opa/press-release/file/967231/download

When did it become against U. S. law to have connections, associations, relationships (business or personal), dealings, meetings, etc., with Russians? Too many people such as yourself either do not see/comprehend the extreme danger in what is being done to Trump, or they don't care.

Has anyone stated clearly and for the record exactly how Russia supposedly interfered with our 2016 election? And exactly how Trump colluded with the Russian government to assist such alleged interference? Exactly what is being investigated? How convenient that investigators don't tell the public anything. This allows all sorts of incorrect, dishonest, misleading garbage to percolate out to the public, damaging lives and the nation. It's even a lie that prosecutors and investigators don't comment on their activities. They do, via leaks, just as Comey did with getting his notes to the NY Times.

Words words words. They scared nobody and no news organization has the slightest fear they will be prosecuted for publishing stolen information.

The NYT as a publisher won’t be holed up in an Ecuadorian embassy for publishing secrets like Assange is.

Andrew McCarthy wrote an article in NR on July 29, There’s more than bank fraud going on here.

"In Washington, it’s never about what they tell you it’s about. So take this to the bank: The case of Imran Awan, Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s mysterious Pakistani IT guy, is not about bank fraud."

"As you let all that sink in, consider this: Awan and his family cabal of fraudsters had access for years to the e-mails and other electronic files of members of the House’s Intelligence and Foreign Affairs Committees. It turns out they were accessing members’ computers without their knowledge, transferring files to remote servers, and stealing computer equipment — including hard drives that Awan & Co. smashed to bits of bytes before making tracks."

I don't dispute that the GOPe is trying to take down Trump. Sessions is not part of the GOPe and never has been. He was confirmed 52-47 with just one Dem voting for him, Mancin.

So far, four have been charged. Criminal investigations take time. More people will be charged as the investigations are completed. Sessions was only confirmed on Feb 9. His deputy was confirmed on April 25.

Sessions is moving ahead making the investigation of leaks a top priority and devoting the resources necessary to do it. And the MSM has been put on notice that they are not immune from prosecution.

A special counsel is not to be appointed unless and until it is determined that there are grounds for a criminal investigation. 28 CFR 600.1

The “Russia investigation” was described by...James Comey, in March 20 congressional testimony.... Explicitly and unambiguously, Director Comey described a counterintelligence investigation, not a criminal investigation. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2017/03/20/full-transcript-fbi-director-james-comey-testifies-on-russian-interference-in-2016-election/

Rosenstein’s authorization to Mueller quotes Comey, “The Special Counsel is authorized to conduct the investigation confirmed by then-FBI Director James B. Corney in testimony before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence on March 20, 2017...” https://www.justice.gov/opa/press-release/file/967231/download

Rosenstein’s authorization violates 28 CFR 600.1

Rosenstein’s appointment of Mueller was and is improper. And Mueller is operating far beyond the scope of the improper authorization.

Who said it was against the law? Even Dershowitz said that collusion is not even a crime. Forget the danger to Trump, we are rushing headlong to a confrontation with the Russians mainly due to a desire by one political party and their allies in the MSM to blame Russia for an election loss. It is a totally manufactured story, but it has real world implications involving a nuclear power.

The Russians are not our friends, but there is no need to increase tensions needlessly. People seem to forget that Russia was a signatory to the Iran Deal and that Obama worked with them to get it done. Or that the US still depends on Russia to get our people to the Space station. The GOPe is also part of this Russia hysteria as they put new sanctions on Russia and the legislation prevents the President from lessening them without Congressional approval. It impacts the President's constitutional authority to conduct foreign relations. They never did this to Obama.

“So far, four have been charged.”

Baloney. Not a single White House arrest has been made. Give me a name. Some low level somewhere mishandling charge may have happened to a hapless nobody who did something.
Wonder if he is counting that reality winner girl.

She ain’t the leaker we are after.
