DETROIT (AP) - Half of Detroits eight mayoral candidates have been convicted of felony crimes involving drugs, assault or weapons. Three of the contenders on next Tuesdays primary ballot were charged with gun crimes, and two of them were charged for assault with intent to commit murder, a Detroit News analysis shows .
Some of the offenses date back decades. The most recent was in 2008.
Political consultant Greg Bowens says there are candidates in every election cycle with past hardships. Black marks on your record show you have lived a little and have overcome some challenges, Bowens said. They (the candidates) deserve the opportunity to be heard, but they also deserve to have the kind of scrutiny that comes along with trying to get an important elected position.
State election law says convicted felons can vote and run for office as long as theyre not incarcerated or guilty of certain fraud-related offenses or crimes involving a breach of the public trust.

My guess is the one with the longest and most serious crimes on record would get the most votes. After all, it must be the candidate with the “most challenges” in life.
Puff-puff-give, you’re screwing up the rotation.
I’m greatly entertained by the title alone!!! Wonder if all the candidates are Democrats? Me is thinking so.
That’s normal.
The other half didn’t get caught.
After all the communists who ran Detroit for so long and ruined the city, a few criminals will actually improve the quality of the politicians.
Mayor Coleman Young - longtime identified member of the Communist Party USA and died a hardcore red
Maryanne Mahaffey - City Council and then CC President - longtime CPUSA supporter then member of the Marxist Democratic Socialists of America
- Erma Henderson- same as above
Judge George Crockett Jr - id. CPUSA, died a red. Voted against condemning the Soviet Union for shooting down civilian airliner KAL 007 which killed fellow U.S. Congressman Larry McDonald (D-Ga) (The other No vote was Rep. John Conyers Jr, (a lifelong communist after the Korean War - he might have been a CPer before he was drafted because his father was a UAW official under CPUSA control - but the father later went with former CPUSA member Walter Reuther’s faction.
Don’t know whether Jackie Vaugh was also on the City Council or not. Longtime red.
Kwame POS Kilpatrick (former mayor)...the greatest criminal in Michigan history is in prison.
The rest have a criminal future?
“Only half?”
Lol!
Gonna be difficult to respect a city that clearly has no respect for itself.
“Black” marks??? Isn’t that racisssss?
