I don’t see the strategic imperative other than perhaps denying the Russians a warm water port for their navy and for exporting oil thru a trans-afghan pipeline.

Memories sure grow short around here. We got into Afghanistan because it was a safe haven for AlQaeda and Osama bin Laden. We had demanded the Taliban surrender up binLaden or we would come in and get him. Taliban said c'mon in, so we did, and with the Northern Alliance defeated the Taliban in days. After that, Bush got wobbly and the whole thing turned into a nation building exercise. BinLaden was neglected. The rest is history, but we still don't want to leave a huge safe haven for future binLadens. Maybe that's a vain objective, but that's about it.
