WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump and two Republican senators on Wednesday unveiled a plan at the White House to half the number of legal immigrants to the United States eventually and favor newcomers who speak English.
Trump threw his support behind a bill developed by senators Tom Cotton of Arkansas and David Perdue of Georgia that they say would cut legal immigration by 50 percent over 10 years by reducing the kinds of relatives immigrants can bring into the country. The legislation faces an uphill climb to get through Congress.
"This competitive application process will favor applicants who can speak English, financially support themselves and their families and demonstrate skills that will contribute to our economy," Trump said.
Trump and the Republican lawmakers blasted the current immigration system as out of date and argued that it hurts American workers by driving down wages.
"The reforms ... will help ensure that newcomers to our wonderful country will be assimilated, will succeed and will achieve the American dream," Trump said.
Under the new bill, the United States would prioritize high-skilled immigrants by setting up a merits-based system similar to those used by Canada and Australia.

Oh, why can’t we be more like CANADA????
Oh wait
Anyone checked out the requirements to emigrate (legally) to Canada?
Tom Cotton sticks his neck out./\
Good for him....
Have you noticed all the politicians complaining about anything or any policy that Trump introduces always say that’s not the way it should be but they have no information and no policy of their own?
Or Mexico.
Up next, Anchor Babies.
Yeah, right.
I can’t wait to get the Dems who would oppose this on record. This is a 100% pro-American worker bill.
Any Dems that oppose, their states should be bombarded with ads that their Reps/Senators prefer to hire foreigners over them....
Trump should put beauty pageant judges in charge of immigration.
[Anyone checked out the requirements to emigrate (legally) to Canada?]
I did. It’s damn near impossible!!!
Trump needs to make this legislation part of any debt ceiling bill.
Check out Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Germany, France
ditto!
Perhaps on health, but definitely not on immigration. The ones who are against Trump's enforcing existing law, and further tightening it want the government to continue Obama's policies of neglect (e.g., border enforcement) and downright sabotage (e.g., DREAM act, "Welcoming Communites" Executive Order, used to seed unvetted and unassimilable foreign communities all over the country).
“cut legal immigration by 50 percent over 10 year”
Oh, for corn’s sake. You cowards. It needs to be cut 100% in ten minutes or less.
I assume that H1-B (and other guest worker visas) arent mentioned in this legislation?
No worries, McStain will vote NO on anything Trump wants.
Another win for the American people.
Hmmm. A non-sentence. Is Neuters describing a plan to halve such a number, perchance? "Halve" is an active verb meaning to cut something in half. "Half," on the other hand . . . is not a verb. An attempt at a sentence that has no verb at all passed through layers of reporters and editors at Neuters, which is, as you know, way smarter that we Americans are.
I'm especially glad the plan in question will favor those who can navigate the English language.
Give it time, and we’ll be like Venezuela.
cut legal immigration by 50 percent for the next 100 years.
Stop immigration of muzzies altogether
