Montana state Auditor Matt Rosendale said Monday he would challenge Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), giving Republicans a top recruit in their effort to win a red-state Senate seat.
Rosendale will enter a crowded GOP primary field but will be the only Republican in the race to hold a statewide office.
Tester, who holds one of the 25 seats the Senate Democratic Caucus is defending next year, is seen as vulnerable. He won his 2012 reelection by about 4 percentage points.
Rosendale announced his bid on Monday with a short video blasting Washington Democrats and touting his conservative chops.
The video specifically touts Rosendale as a would-be ally to President Trump and Vice President Pence, making clear he would support the administration in a state Trump won by about 20 points in November.
"There's a shadow over Montana an intrusive federal government run by insiders, liberals and big spenders. They are everything that is wrong with Washington," the narrator of the ad says. "President Trump and Mike Pence are fighting back, but they need help."

This should be an easy win. I never understood how this state could have anything blue.
True!
Never heard of him. Treasurer? Neither has anyone else.
Judicially,Montana is one of the most liberal states off the coasts.
“This should be an easy win. I never understood how this state could have anything blue.”
Because YOU don’t live here!
We (Montana) have only reelected ONE Republican Senator in state history - Tester defeated him by lying.
Jeannette Rankin was the only US Representative to vote against entering WWII - and she represented Montana.
Polar Bears International - Bozeman, MT
Aid to Orphans of Madagascar - Bozeman, MT
This is a big race, IMO. One to watch.
It’s not enough just to get more R jerseys.
The Democrats in R jerseys who vote for amnesty must be removed.
Corker, Hatch, Heller and Flake in 2018.
Thanks for posting.. I am shocked. Is this a gerrymandering thing?
PA also has a serious challenger to the most worthless enator Bob Casey. Looks like Congressman Lou Barletta is gonna take on Casey for the senate seat. Two NEPA guys, but that’s where the similarities end. Hoping the best for Lou!!!
I was in Scranton last month. Toured the coal mine and train museum. That should be America First country, no doubt. Barletta is a good candidate. Hope for the best!
Not really.
We have only one congressional rep.
State wise I get gerrymandered every decade.
The Republicans control the House and Senate but are, in fact, quite liberal. Makes me angry!
The state has a $1,000,000,000 (yes, billion) permanent fund from an excise tax from coal.
The good: It takes 75% of both houses to tap into this fund. It has never been tapped.
The bad: The Republicans ALWAYS try to tap this fund for stupid reasons, The Dem’s stop ‘em.
My Wife and I live in the county on acreage (I’m fourth generation Montanan) and our closest neighbors are from:
California: 7
Washington State: 1
Texas: 1
Kansas: 1
Montana: (excluding us): 4
Connecticut: 1
Massachusetts: 1
Vermont: 1
You get the idea...
Have a great day!
So, is Rosendale real conservative or establishment?
Should have been an easy win in 2012 yet Tester won by four points. He's popular in the state so don't even think this will be an easy win. It's winnable, no doubt about it, but assuming he wins the primary Rosendale will still have his work cut out for him.
Yikes, those are your neighbors? I don’t mean to be nosy, but I lived in Alaska. Most hard climates are home to libertarians. Is someone funding The California and taxavhusetts folks? Loved visiting, beautiful state! They are taking over red states in great numbers, but leaving illegals in their blue states to keep them secure. I guess they don’t have to work for a living. Good luck n God Bless!
Will there be a Libertarian in the race to take votes from the Republican?
Voting republican accomplished what?
Hope I'll see some conservatives run in Massachusetts, Connecticut and other places...
Stubby looks and talks like a All American Conservative and then votes 95% of the time with up Chuck Schumer.
Would love to see a big Trump rally in Missoula.
Are your neighbors Conservatives that escaped? Or are they liberals who think they can fix Montana?
