Why would I *possibly* want a Tesla?
At this point in my life, my fantasy is to buy some land (at least a couple hundred acres with some water on it), and have old but reliable vehicles I can work on in my barn (I was born in and have spent most of my life in cities).
It’s not a solution to everyone. Your needs may vary.
For someone wanting a nice commuter car with a ~100 mile daily round trip, and with easy access to a gasoline car for occasional longer trips (say, an SUV), it’s nice to have such a nice option that’s “topped off” every morning for darn near free. Great acceleration, responsive, clean, roomy, etc.
What??? You don’t need some more panache, some more “cool” factor? Everybody needs that and it is priceless.
My diesel gets an *actual* 53MPG on the highway and has a 700+ mile highway cruising range. When “recharging” is needed it can be done in about 4 minutes at any one of 30,000 “recharging” stations coast-to-coast.

Not everybody needs or wants a Tesla. But over a half million people put down a deposit on one.
Not everybody needs or wants a diesel, either.
The federal government is subsidizing those cars, which are the highest-polluting and least efficient yet devised. What's not to love?
