(CNN)
For years, US authorities were desperate to get their hands on a man they called the "Peacock," a Syrian-born weapons dealer said to be behind some of the world's most notorious acts of violence.
The man, whose real name is Monzer al-Kassar, got rich by selling weapons and military equipment to terrorists and armies fighting in Iraq, Iran, Africa, Eastern Europe, Central America and elsewhere, according to the US Drug Enforcement Agency.
All along, Kassar flaunted his money with an expensive lifestyle, including fancy clothes, cars and lavish estates, which is what gave him the nickname "the Proud Peacock." DEA agents described him as a "global criminal" who eventually grew to become one of the top five weapons dealers in the world. "But to try to lock up an international arms trafficker, you're dancing with the devil," said Nicholas J. Nargi, DEA assistant special agent in charge. Kassar remained elusive until 2007, when an intricately choreographed DEA sting operation finally brought him down.
Only now are new details emerging about that dramatic arrest, as part of CNN's Original Series "Declassified." But Kassar proved to be a very cautious man, and that nearly derailed the entire operation.
Achille Lauro
The 1985 terror attack by the Palestinian Liberation Front on the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro shocked the world. "Monzer was the supplier of the weapons," said James Soiles, retired DEA chief of global operations. "He brought the weapons from Poland and turned them over to the fighters."

So, is the chump pushing up daisies yet?
Making he’s working on Capitol Hill for the Democrats!
Great. Now, he gets a warm bed to sleep in, lots of good food, and the best health care money can buy. It would be much better if he was pushing up daisies.
I agree. But they caught him with Spain’s help. Even if the death penalty was an option on our side, you know how touchy these Euro countries get when they think the dp is involved.
Right! lol.
Or running his operation from his cell!
It really seems like, every time American politics heats up, and especially if the coals are under the democrats, all of a sudden something new, exciting or devastating crops up.
IMO, we are SO under the propaganda and misdirection influence, it's hard to keep up and synopsize for people that do NOT research and discover these things.
Yes I do. I don't mean to sidestep the thread, but sometimes I think the reason they do, is because European nations know what kind of a sorry history they have, and they feel guilty about it, so they are trying to compensate for it. 🙃
+1. We needed a new villain. A setup to another 5 part play. A few tv spin offs and a network loosely hanging on to it’s last shred of credibility.
Oceania vs Eurasia — Orwells 1984.
Yeah, they were very good at slaughtering a few times in their history, for sure. *A lot* of innocents. Now they have gone to the other extreme, and think doing in the baddies is bad.
Oh I definitely agree on the misdirection and propaganda!
When I did a Google search with his name and FR, I did pull up a few threads where he was mentioned.
Here is one in 2007 regarding his arrest:
