Republican Senator Rand Paul slammed Attorney General Jeff Sessions support for civil asset forfeiture during a Tuesday interview, calling the practice offensive.
Fox News host Steve Doocy asked the senator from Kentucky about his thoughts on President Donald Trumps recent criticisms of Sessions, particularly on Sessions recusal from the Russian probe and his apparent unwillingness to investigate Hillary Clintons emails.
I understand both sides, Paul responded, before stating, I have my own concerns with Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
I am very much offended by the fact that he is now promoting a policy of going after poor peoples property, taking it without a conviction, he said. This is called civil asset forfeiture.
As Paul explains in the interview, law enforcement officers may be incentivized to improperly seize assets because those assets can then be used to fund police office expenses.
In our country you should be innocent until proven guilty and your property shouldnt be taken without a court trial, Paul argued. The fact that Attorney General Sessions is going all-in on this really is offensive to a lot of us who have been trying to reform this situation.

Not a libertarian, but I’m so happy to see a Senator who is focused on policy.
This one issue, to me, is contradictory to the Constitution. How do they reconcile confiscating a home when there is more than one name on the deed if only of the people is convicted of a crime? Also, confiscation of property, other than evidence, is simply theft in the hopes that they can keep it and further the power of the state.
Civil asset forfeitures are just too tempting for corrupt bureaucrats to abuse to feather their own nests. This was a disappointment for Sessions to support the concept so STRONGLY.
This has nothing to do with the WH. These are the policies of an attorney general gone rogue.
I don’t like asset forfeiture either, but I listened to the entire speech Sessions gave and it seems he was putting in policies to help the victims. That said, it’s still unconstitutional.
I am too.
Then why has POTUS not said a word about it? He already tweets about every other topic under the sun.
Agree. Govt should have no claim to someone’s property that’s legally acquired. It belongs to the next of kin who may be totally innocent. This is just theft, confiscation.
As Well he should.
Trump seems to agree with Sessions.
This issue, along with Trump’s support for the State against the Bundys and Hammonds is gonna cause trouble for Trump over the long haul.
Is Trump for it?
I thought Sessions was an inch away from sainthood according to some posters on this site.
no way
How do we know?
I thought Jeff was a conservative.. I guess not.
Saint Jeffery the Innocent is in El Salvador tonight chasing down MS-13, Yeah, that’s what Republicans are concerned about...
Probably...his fondness for Kelo is well documented.
Offended? How about you disagree.
We need to ban a lot of words which ridiculously over used:
Offended
Horrific
Hellstorm, I’m looking at you Matt
Safe space
The list has become long.
Doesn’t the AG work directly for the president?
