I just finished writing a novel in which I wanted to introduce the Devil but give a different slant to what he was and his attributes. I needed to give him some sort of limitation, so I conceived of him as being restricted to telling only the truth, which he uses as a weapon to play upon the guilt of sinners and cause them to despair of being able to aspire to the divine. His hell is full of souls who remain there of their own free will, unable to face the shame and guilt of their worldly transgressions. By acting so, the Devil assuages his own guilt--the more damned souls, the less the guilt. (Very similar to the way in which homosexuals seek to force acceptance of their vice on the rest of society, and for the same reason.)
Of course one of his chief aims is to convince the sinner that God exists, because otherwise there is little guilt to act upon.
I started reading a book but never finished it. I think it was by a theologian. His premise was that there isn't a hell as an actual place. EVERYONE will be in the presence of God in the afterlife. He makes some reasonable references to the Bible where after the new creation of heaven and earth, all will be in the presence of God.
HOWEVER - while unbelievers will ALSO be in the presence of God, His light will be piercing their souls and revealing all of their sins, and the guilt will be unbearable - so a hell for them. For eternity.
I have no idea how accurate it is. But I likened it to a child and his mom (well - me and my mom!). It would be one thing to be caught doing something and chastised for it - but then it was forgiven and forgotten.
It would be another thing if EVERY time I saw my mom for the rest of my life she would say “You haven't taken any change from my jar have you today? Remember when you were eight and you stole that quarter so you could buy candy!? You are so naughty!!”
