I suggested to my girls that they put up a sign saying their lemonade was “free” and add the note “donations accepted”. Ashley misunderstood and wrote “expected” instead of “accepted”, but they still made close to $50 on a hot afternoon next to rush hour traffic.

That's a clever misunderstanding. "Expected" is better.

When my son was 8 years old he asked me if he could try to sell the citrus fruit I grew in the yard, I told him go ahead.
He bagged up the grape fruit at 10 to a bag, sold them for 2 dollars a bag.
When I got home from work he showed me his 180.00 dollars he earned.
Boy must have worked his tail off for the first time in his life.
(but we all hated grape fruit anyway).
