That's the teachers fault. He should have differentiated between "=" and "==". One is a statement and one is an assignment of one calculation to a place called "a". Learning assembler makes it clearer.

Also used in Java, C+, Python, etc - yet sometimes I still code it wrong the first time.

A == A + 1 is not a mathematical statement. The student was correct when he said a = a +1 is impossible. The teacher was wrong.
