His North Vietnamese captors told him hed never go home.
They beat and tortured him to no end, but the Navy flyers patriotism manifested itself in historic defiance, refusing to do the easy thing for his own reward.
He would not accept freedom before other prisoners whod been there longer than he: It wasnt the right thing to do, he thought.
Instead, he gave the enemy hell.
Now he has brain cancer.
And hes 80 years old.
Its the appropriate time to loudly honor this war hero for his toughness and resolve in combat and captivity, but subsequently during his political career.
He has shown an integrity and individualism that goes unduplicated in modern politics.

Yesterday, his daughter Meghan released a statement reading, The cruelest enemy could not break him. The aggression of political life could not bend him. So he is meeting this challenge as he has every other.
John McCain has stared death in the face several times in his life. Hes always made it through.
Well, Tom, you always make it through “staring death in the face” until you don’t!
Thought McCain was crazy decades ago - prefer to see positive stories like this rather than what the cretins who spit on a man’s grave because they have no class spout. Good post.

I wish Sen. McCain the best: remission, a few more quiet years in retirement with his family.
However, what a dumb headline.
McCain’s a brave man... he’s in my prayers.
Not spitting on his grave on his grave, but making a hero out of someone, when they’re not annoys the hell out of me. His hero status is based on being famous, not deeds. Real heros die everyday with nary a word.
Cancer doesn’t respect bravery... and McCain should not be forced to feel he didn’t ‘fight’ hard enough. He’s got an aggressive fast moving cancer - possible caused by cell phone use. He doesn’t need to carry the burden of letting down people who believe in him.

“Risks after Prolonged and Heavy Mobile Phone Use”
“If exposure to RF fields through mobile phone use were tumorigenic, people using mobile phones longest and those who were the heaviest users would be expected to show the highest risks of brain tumors.”
It is amazing how a serious life-threatening crisis can totally refocus a person’s thinking. Suddenly, all these other verbal and emotional conflicts with other men sink into irrelevancy, and the head-on reckoning with what may very well be the last fight takes every scrap of personal attention.
This cancer strikes at the very heart of the consciousness and soul of anyone who may be afflicted with it. May John McCain gain the serenity and courage to face this coming most challenging trial in his lifetime, and make his peace with whatever lies in the Great Beyond. From some things, there is simply no going back.
McCain will be dead before the end of the year. You don't recover from the type of cancer he has. He might fight a little harder knowing that President Trump will be at his funeral but I'd say he's cooked by Thanksgiving.
He gave the American people Barack Obama, and for that he deserves our indifference, if not our scorn.
Appropriate, for the political turkey that he is. . . .
His commander in prison wanted him tried for treason........
Hero.......?
I’ve been often aggravated by McCain in the political realm, but he conducted himself in a stellar manner during his time in captivity. Adm James Stockdale lauded McCain’s steadfastness during that time. That Stockdale satisfactionwith McCain’s adherence to the Code of Conduct supersedes the words of anyone else on the face of the earth.
This article is nothing but schlock.
Some politicians don’t know when to get off the stage. I am placing my bet on cancer.
*Stockdale’s satisfaction with...
He’s already dead..
I'll blame McCain for many things but never that. Reagan himself couldn't have won in 2008 after Dubya tarnished the GOP brand as thoroughly as he did.
This being said, McCain could not have ran a more lackluster and uninspired campaign, the objective of which was seemingly not to defeat his Democratic opponent, but to defeat his pick for Vice President.
Really tired of the martial analogies with respect to fighting cancer. Grittiness may help on the margins, but your survival rate is almost exclusively determined by timing and treatment.
