Citing Recusal, Trump Says He Wouldn’t Have Hired Sessions
The New York Times ^ | 19 Jul 17 | PETER BAKER, MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT and MAGGIE HABERMAN

Posted on 07/19/2017 6:14:34 PM PDT by SkyPilot

President Trump said on Wednesday that he never would have appointed Attorney General Jeff Sessions had he known Mr. Sessions would recuse himself from overseeing the Russia investigation that has dogged his presidency, calling the decision “very unfair to the president.”

In a remarkable public break with one of his earliest political supporters, Mr. Trump complained that Mr. Sessions’s decision ultimately led to the appointment of a special counsel that should not have happened. “Sessions should have never recused himself, and if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else,” Mr. Trump said.

In a wide-ranging interview with The New York Times, the president also accused James B. Comey, the F.B.I. director he fired in May, of trying to leverage a dossier of compromising material to keep his job. Mr. Trump criticized both the acting F.B.I. director who has been filling in since Mr. Comey’s dismissal and the deputy attorney general who recommended it. And he took on Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel now leading the investigation into Russian meddling in last year’s election.

Mr. Trump said Mr. Mueller was running an office rife with conflicts of interest and warned investigators against delving into matters too far afield from Russia. Mr. Trump never said he would order the Justice Department to fire Mr. Mueller, nor would he outline circumstances under which he might do so. But he left open the possibility as he expressed deep grievance over an investigation that has taken a political toll in the six months since he took office.

I was so happy when he was nominated. I thought finally, someone with integrity will finally head up the DOJ.

Apparently the gentleman I saw in Sessions was really a coward. I couldn’t be more disappointed.

>I find the CTH explanation too clever by half. Sessions will not allow himself to be demeaned and humiliated in such a way. I still predict that Sessions will resign before the week is up.

That would be disastrous. I hope you’re wrong, but I fear you might be right.

As strongly as Trump feels about it, it was his obligation to let Sessions know during the weeks

Yeah like he didn't have anything else to do.

The democrats, probably with the help of a few RINOs, set a trap for Sessions and whether by naiveté or design Sessions stepped into it. He was naive to thin Rosenstien was honest but the speed with which Mueller was on the job look a lot like this was an extremely well thought out plan.

I for one don't think Mueller is after Trump, I think he is there to destroy all the incriminating evidence of Hillary ad Obozo's crimes. But we shall see. Taking down Trump would be a bonus for them.

> I understand the frustration. But I find Trump’s assignment of blame to be despicable.

I don’t. When Sessions recused himself without talking to Trump I felt that it would led to a disaster that might doom the republic. The Dems are playing for blood and Sessions is playing by the old rules of honor. If Trump is impeached then we’ll have civil war and the root of that impeachment will be the Honorable Senator Sessions recusing himself.

I wish Judge Moore would win his seat: would be a vast improvement over Sessions.

True, but many people on this website are shallow, so those comments don’t surprise me.

Sessions recused himself because he met with the Russian Ambassador which is SOP for Senators. Great reason to recuse himself! And he recused himself without warning his boss! Brilliant strategic move on Sessions’ part.

The issues of immigration and trade along with protecting the American worker are what won it for Trump. Sessions 2014 article Becoming the Party of Work provided the template for victory. And the move of Steve Miller from Sessions senate staff to the Trump campaign was key. Miller wrote many of the speeches including Trump’s inaugural address and his Warsaw speech. Sessions early endorsement gave Trump a leg up on Cruz.

We will see what happens, but I can’t imagine a situation where Sessions remains as AG. Trump has crossed the Rubicon on this one with his ill-advised comments.

Sessions has had an illegal FBI to conduct any investigation with up to this point, so I’m not willing to lay all this on Sessions.

However, if he was thinking about recusing himself at the time of the appointment, then he should have told the president.

I was never a Sessions supporter for AG. I was thinking of Sessions staying in the Senate due to his seniority, or something to do with immigration.

Dr. Carson is the only Trump Appointment who is more quiet than Sessions. Rick Perry is quiet too, but at least I hear a little something every so often. Carson? Not a word in months, other than a quick sound bite here and there.
Mad-Maxine has been criticizing Dr. Carson here lately, but I’ve never heard him react to anything. This is what I would expect from an Ambassador, not a Cabinet Official.

Is Carly Fiorina busy?
She would be ‘off the chain’ after these Dems who think they are ‘too big to jail’.

If any bomb is going to drop it will be firing Mueller and his cabal of Democrap lawyers. All Trump has to do is find someone with enough cojones who do this and appoint him an Assistant Attorney General. Then bombs away!
Then sideline that maggot Rod Rosenstien to where he can’t do any more damage.

I still support Jeff Sessions but if he is so brilliant and effective then it is his responsibility to undo the hiring of Robert Mueller as Special Prosecutor. This all came about because Sessions recused himself on Russia which was gutless which is something an Eric Holder and Loretta Lynch would never have done.

Who brought Rod Rosenstien in? He was the poison pill in all this. He woke up one day and decided to appoint Robert “The Fix Is In” Mueller.

And Rosenstein was only able to do this due to Jeff Sessions stupid recusal. Damn right Donald Trump has a right to be angry at Jeff Sessions. Especially now with Donny Jr being involved in this Russia setup by Dems.

Session’s has been so effective that an SP was appointed under false pretenses. I am sure that will end well. /s

Trump's ill-advised comments as opposed to Sessions’ ill-advised recusal? Sessions didn't even have the presence of mind to warn the Administration before he announced it. How is that helpful to Trump? The country? How does that strengthen the Administration?

Jeff Sessions going “White Knight” with his Russia recusal led to the SP which is death of a thousand cuts. The Donald has a right to be angry. Jeff Sessions is doing lots of good things but he has exposed his boss to serious political harassment all because he recused himself. Why? I suppose to avoid headaches and harassment of Jeff Sessions. If I can see this Trump can see this.
