Rolling Stone Takes Cheap Shot at Trump in Dunkirk Review

Could someone remind me how old President Donald Trump was at the time of the real life evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940? Oh, he still wouldn't be born for another six years? Really? However, this did not prevent Rolling Stone movie reviewer Peter Travers from invoking his name in a negative way from out of nowhere in the middle of a review of what looks to be an outstanding film, "Dunkirk."

First let us look at the positive aspect of Travers' review when he focused strictly on the movie before taking his cheap shot at Trump. Before he came to that completely unneccessary jarring moment, Traver's provided us with a glowing review to the extent that "Christopher Nolan's WWII Epic May Be the Greatest War Film Ever":

Some how I am receiving the Rolling Stone every month. I never asked for a subscription and none of my friends or family signed me up. Another FReeper told me that they do that to boost phony circulation numbers; they just mail out magazines. Probably got my name from Smithsonian magazine because my 92 year old mom still gives me a subscription as a Christmas present.

But what it really means is that Rolling Stone is a dying leftwing rag.

I am sick of this diversity crap in cinema. I have always had some interest in the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, and got to speak for several hours with the ship’s doctor a few years back...so, when I saw a movie “USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage” came out, I ponied up for watching it as soon as it was available.

What a piece of crap movie. Having Nicholas Cage as Captain McVay should have been a sign, but I watched 15 min and couldn’t watch any more.

For a subject like that, there should be no need to make a stupid sub-plot of 1945 racism or a love story just to get minority actors and women into the story.

It should have, and deserved to stand on its own merits, a story that should have been told, but was Hollywoodized out of all recognition. Boy, did that piss me off.

I am glad to hear people complain there aren’t enough women or minorities in the movie, because that might mean they did it correctly to reflect the times.

OTOH, if Rolling Stone gave it a great review, that is reason enough for me to think twice about seeing it.

I still peruse it, occasionally. The better to know my enemies. And, I can read everything of value in 20 min or less, so it's not a daunting task. :-)

I didn't take issue with that line, per se...after all, except for Lend Lease, and the aggressive interaction our US Navy ships were having with the Germans (though few shots fired) prior to Dunkirk in 1940, we weren't involved actively. (As I said, our ships were aggressively involved in some things that might have turned sticky, patrolling as if on a war footing, etc...which made captains of those ships complain because they couldn't train...we were busy, but not in a shooting war yet.)

I do have issue with the stupid Trump comment, though.

I was annoyed to see, in the new Spider-Man movie, they cast a young man of Indian extraction in the role of Flash Thompson. He was a little runt. The Flash Thompson character from the comics is a big, football player/ bully type. Nothing against people of that race, but that just isn’t the character at all.

I'll go with "or less." Normally, it doesn't make it past the trash can in my garage workshop.

And for that reason I will sometimes scan it while at the workbench before it hits the trash can. But it is a unsettling experience. I see the positions and world view of Bernie Sanders' supporters, and am a bit frightened that someday those unhinged people may hold the levers of power.

Lend Lease and the active patrolling in the Atlantic was post-Dunkirk.

However,

The US had opened up arms sales prior to Dunkirk, so there was a large flow of material to France and Britain, but that was on a cash&credit basis. Besides raw materials and technical equipment such as engines, quite a lot of military equipment had already been delivered, for instance enough aircraft to make up as 25-30% of the French Air Force, and thousands more aircraft were in the pipeline by May 1940. The US was already an important factor.

I, along with the other graduates of Homer J. Simpson's seminar in WWII seventy years later, know a heck of a lot more about WWII that this bigoted tool.

But of course I can't wait to see the movie.
