While there is merit to your point that Michigan is more than the cities, most of the cities are leftist. This includes the I-75 corridor (Flint, Saginaw, Bay City), Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo,etc. Plus, northern lower and the UP tend to have a leftist bent, probably from the welfare crowd up there. They elected Dems for many years, until they threw out the Dem rep who betrayed them and voted for Obamacare. In any event, Michigan is split about 50/50 between patriotic Americans and the leftists.
Additionally people here who call themselves democrats own guns and load up their yards with flags alongside the rest of the population. Most hunt, eat meat, drive SUVs or trucks, and everyone here fishes.
So we have a few leftist types but they are very very different from the ones downstate. Even the democrats here don't want refugees coming.
With one exception - Traverse. I never go there for that reason unless it is work-related.
