Saddam Hussein lost that long-running border war he had going on with Iran, which had begun in earnest after the Shah was deposed and the Islamic Republic of Iran proclaimed the moral superiority and authority of the Shi’ite faction of Islam.

Iraq is almost inevitably headed to division into the three countries. This was strongly suggested by that great theoretical thinker, Joe Biden, in an op-ed in the New York Times in 2006 (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/01/opinion/01biden.html), which shows what a great statesman he is.

"Iraq is almost inevitably headed to division into the three countries."

If that were to happen, the last 15 years of war will seem like an opening battle. Turkey would never let the Kurds have their own country, The Sunni Arabs would all line up on the side of Anbar province splitting away and the Shiites in Iran and Syria would line up behind the rest of Iraq to keep it together. You would have war on all fronts, plus the Kurds in Iraq wouldn't stop in Iraq, they would want the Kurdish region of Turkey and Syria to combine with them into one country.

Did that great statesman mention all of this in 2006?
