The money laundering case was handled by DOJ attorney Preet Bharara until he was fired in March 2017. The case was settled May 12, 2017 for $6M

If the case had any merit, it was settled on unusually favorable terms for Natalia Veselnitskaya's clients.

If the case had no merits was some sort of pressure being applied or some sort of coercion taking place.

The fact that case was settled very soon after Bharara left could be significant.

At any rate, it would not be a bad idea to look at the settlement of the lawsuit in the context the meeting with Donald Trump Jr, attempts by Democrats and Republicans to fabricate a dossier on President Trump and the illegal spying on the Trump campaign.

Katsyv’s attorney Gay said the current controversy over allegations of Russian meddling in U.S. elections had likely motivated both sides to settle before trial. “It’s such a heated political environment right now,” she said. “I’m sure that was a factor.” http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-crime-prevezon-idUSKBN18904I
