Hospital officials say Chinese Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo's condition has worsened and that he's in respiratory failure.
The hospital treating him in the northeastern city of Shenyang released a statement on Wednesday, 2 days after its announcement that Liu was in a critical state.
Officials added that they explained to his family that Liu needs artificial help to breathe, but that they declined it.
The writer was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2009, after criticizing the Communist Party for its one-party rule.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010 while in jail.
Liu was released on parole last month after being diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer.
He and his family want him to be treated abroad. Hospitals in Germany and the US have said they are ready to accept him.
On Tuesday, the US State Department again urged the Chinese government to allow Liu to leave unconditionally.
But, Chinese authorities have rejected the request.
Global Times, the Communist Party-affiliated newspaper, stressed the legitimacy of the decision in an editorial in its English-language edition.
It says Liu is a convicted criminal under Chinese law and that foreign governments must respect the decision of the Chinese authorities.
Don’t the ChiComs have “free”, single payer medical care?
End stage liver cancer.. seen it a few times, nasty way to go, as bad as many cancers.
