Now, Russia still has a lot of oil and gas reserves. And it uses this to bully Eastern and Western Europe. It threatens to cut off these resources if Europe dares to complain about Putin power-grabs in Crimea, eastern Ukraine, the Baltics, and elsewhere.
But enter President Donald Trump. In his brilliant speech in Warsaw, Poland, earlier this week, he called Putins energy bluff.
It may well have been the best speech of his young presidency. Trump delivered a stirring leadership message, emphasizing the importance of God, freedom, strong families, and democratic values.
But in an absolutely key part of the speech, he took direct aim at Vladimir Putins energy bullying.
Trump said, We are committed to securing your access to alternative sources of energy so Poland and its neighbors are never again held hostage to a single supplier of energy. Italics are all mine.
President Donald Trump has quickly made it clear that Barack Obamas war on business is over. Hes also made it clear, through regulatory rollbacks of breathtaking scope, that the Obama war on fossil fuels is over.
In short, with the free-market policies hes putting in place in Americas energy sector and throughout the U.S. economy, the business-man president fully intends to destroy Russias energy-market share. And as that takes hold, Russias gas-station economy will sink further.
And as that takes hold, bully-boy Putin will have to think twice about Ukraine, Poland, and the Baltics. Hell have to think twice about his anti-American policies in the Middle East and North Korea. And hell have to think twice about his increasingly precarious position as the modern-day Russian tsar.
And the world may yet become a safer place.
Trump has Putin over a barrel.

Work with the Saudis. All well and good.
But move our embassy to Jerusalem!
East Jerusalem.
Exactly! We need to cooperate with Putin to combat Islamic extremism - the true enemy of civilization.
“So you object to the most established and prestigious conservative journal praising President Trump?”
No, I object to that shopworn bastion of neverTrumper neocon backstabbers trying to tongue-bathe their way back into some marginal relevance.
Clear enough for you?
Weak article with the analytical depth of a middle school student.
Clear enough. You’re a Trumpbot. You think everything revolves around Trump.
“Clear enough. Youre a Trumpbot. You think everything revolves around Trump.”
Not at all. I just hate neocons. Each and every one of them. They crave to shed innocent blood.
I don't get this part. Why should the Ukraine want to be part of Russia, which murdered millions of their people by starvation? And also considering Russia is Russian Orthodox, and Ukraine is Roman Catholic, with its own culture and traditions?
I didn't see the Buchanan column.
I yearn for the good olde days when moronic trouble-makers were banned from FR.
I think Ukraine is mostly Ukrainian Orthodox with their patriarch in Kiev. It was Christian longer then Russia.
The Latin Rite is a small percentage.
> I don’t get this part. Why should the Ukraine want to be part of Russia, which murdered millions of their people by starvation? And also considering Russia is Russian Orthodox, and Ukraine is Roman Catholic, with its own culture and traditions?
Ukraine’s Eastern Orthodox.
And don’t you mean the Communists murdered millions Ukrainians? Stalin wasn’t Russian.
That is a smear.
...........I just can’t help wondering WHO’s pocket Lowry is in?
Is it a cabal of globalist’s, blackmail or what? It’s plain to see that Trump is more conservative than he is so where’s the beef?
The Soviet Union under Stalin, who was a Georgian, killed those people. Also, Ukraine is mostly EAST ORTHODOX, not Roman Catholic. Yes, there are some Catholics in the western region of Galicia, but they’re mostly UNIATE or GREEK CATHOLIC-in religious practice mostly the same as the Orthodox, but in communion with Rome.
Maybe a chance to counterbalance our western “allies.”. Read Larry Bond’s “ Cauldron. “. Prescient.
Established and prestigious conservative journal. Lol.
William F. Buckley’s magazine, established in the 1950s. Has been an intellectual leader in the conservative movement for decades. Has had the presence of writers such as Russell Kirk, Frank Meyer, John DosPassos, James Burnham, and many other leading conservative minds.
But for you, it’s all about Trump, Iguess, so none of that counts. Never mind its decades of fighting for conservative principles.
It appears he is gradually doing this. He’s aacomplished quite a bit in Europe already, and certainly more to follow. He’s leaning on the EU and the UN...
Go Ted!
By Ukraine, I mean the Crimean area of what is now present-day Ukraine. The Crimea was always part of Russia and has always been Russian Orthodox.
