CHICAGO (WLS) -- A father was killed in front of his children on the Fourth of July in a tragic fireworks accident on Chicago's Southwest Side.
Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, 42-year-old David Griffin was lighting fireworks in an alley in the 2500-block of West 54th Street in the city's Gage Park neighborhood. His wife said he was with his young children at the time.
When he went to check on a firework that didn't seem to be firing, it blew up in his face as it shot into the air, police and fire officials said.

The firecracker was not defective, the user was defective
Too soon?
“Too soon?”
The only thing that was too soon was his bending down and putting his head right above the firecracker that he thought might be defective.
Some people just don’t have that self preservation safety gene.
He done blowed up real good...
Were his last words “Hold ma 40”?
It literally blew-up in his face.
For some reason, I cannot find this guy on Face Book.
Ouch. That’s gonna leave a mark.
A greasy skid mark.

Usually it is parents who warn their children not to do this.
If the guy could read and follow directions, then this would not have happened.
Says “Light Fuse, Run Away”
I started to do that once, but the old brain kicked into gear at the last moment...
To have lived so long and with a wife and family. How could he do something so stupid. Really feel sorry for his children that saw that.
Where’s the Al Gore picture?
My cousin’s son took a mortar round to the face on the 4th. Messed up his lips, but didn’t kill him.
Calling the “Darwin Award” committee. Clean-up in the 2500-block of West 54th Street, Chicago.
I remember when the directions were “Lay flat on ground. Light fuse. Run away quickly.”
Fireworks are bombs. The decibel level is louder than the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. They should be banned from public use. Leave it to the experts.
