Obama gave us Trump. The animus against Obama was was strong, if not stronger, than it is against Trump. Obama made it clear that he did not like white people, Christians, conservatives, gun owners, businessmen, capitalism, the military, patriotism or America. The opposition was, however, more restrained, partly because of the risks involved in criticizing him and partly because those who opposed him aren’t as inclined to become openly hysterical, but the backlash is both deep and wide. Trump tapped into the revulsion and anger Obama instilled in mainstream Americans.
Good analysis. I’d only add to it that, since it was based largely on white guilt, not ideology (the hopey-changey thing meant any thing to any body and was thus easily dissolved), Obama’s support was always shallow.
