We had a similar situation in Valdez years ago. Young male brown bear looking for territory. We called Juneau and got permission to take out the bear if it returned, then shot it at close range in the head. The animal control officer came the following morning and took the carcass. since it was out of season, it was confiscated by ADFG for biological research. Aside: The ADFG told us in Juneau that their officers couldn’t shoot bears except to protect from immediate danger of death. Their job was to protect, not kill. Civilians were occasionally given permission, but no trophy could be taken.
