I didn’t know they paid money.
They play an ad before the video starts. You get a cut of the ad revenue. Some people are making a good living from making Youtube videos. I'm sure 99+% of videos posted don't make any money, but some do.
My son's response to this, "It's the monkey's paw story in real life." They wanted to get famous on Youtube and they got their wish.
