CHICAGO The end of the school year doesnt have to mean the end of school lunches for Chicagos children in need.
Starting Monday, the Chicago Public Schools LunchStop summer meal program will provide free lunch to children ages 1-18 at 96 outdoor community sites throughout Chicago. Children do not have to be CPS students to receive a free lunch.
These summer meals are funded through the Summer Food Service Program sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture and administered by the Illinois State Board of Education. Last year, LunchStop served approximately 95,000 meals at 50 locations throughout the city.
LunchStop locations operate from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at locations across the city.
Officials say only 14 percent of kids who receive meals through the national school lunch programs continue getting them through the summer.

Well, at least they won’t be able to buy lottery tickets there.
If these kids have families getting food stamps, why are they getting free meals?
Perhaps the food stamps need to be cut.
Illinois is broke. US taxpayers will not bail them out.
Our church really struggles with this. We have potlucks in the park during the summer, and these are not supposed to be evangelism events or designed to be "open to the general public," but fellowship events. However, at every one, we get a number of kids, and sometimes adults who will walk right up and just help themselves, usually without asking. They don't want to stay and be a part of our group or learn about our church (we invite them to participate), they just want the free food, then they wander off, taking their heaping plates of food with them. The struggle comes from wanting to be Christ-like, yet also not wanting to encourage behavior like you mention where we enable things that aren't good for people, if you know what I mean. Sometimes, it's hard to know where that line is.
Families to drugged out or lazy to cook? Maybe selling their food stamps for dope?
At least they will be life-long reliable, easily-led, gullible democrat voters, community organizers and welfare-state customers.
I am just as conflicted by the food bank run by one of my local churches.
Looking at the manner of dress, the cars they drive, etc., I am guessing most of the people who show-up really don’t need a food bank.
But we probably have to tolerate that B.S. in order to ensure that the folks who really DO need help get it.
Our welfare program continues to reward irresponsible people.
It’s like putting Miracle-Gro on weeds.
Here in TX, these summer FREE! lunches are offered to anyone 0-21.
Due to school taxes, we don’t turn the a/c on until it’s over 90 degrees now. The belt can’t be tightened any further.
We can’t afford the perks we’re paying them to have. Four years ago, as a treat/splurge, Mr. b wanted some bbq so I pulled through the drive thru. Upon seeing the EBT card on the window, I kept driving. Haven’t been back since.
Welfare should be limited to no more than 6 months twice in a lifetime.
They game the heck out of Christmas. They sign up multiple times for all the free gifts they can get. Remember that next time you see a gift tree at the mall.
Simple. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. If they refuse to learn to fish, they are stealing from you. The Bible says, "Thou shalt not steal."
As long as they are still a family they’re winners in my books, even if they were wearing potato sacks (the under 40 crowd will have to Google that)
No, you shouldn’t tolerate it. The church members know from looking around their neighborhoods who is truly needful. A bag of groceries dropped by on their doorsteps is using your funds more wisely than handing them out to any and all.
Will the last person leaving Chicago, please turn off the lights?
Illinois isn’t paying for this. People all across the country are. Every state does this and it is done through the USDA which is a FEDERAL program. So is the food stamp program.
That's why the U.S. Is 20 trillion in debt!
Is the bankrupt state paying for this, the city, or the Federal government?
As I heard a pastor say once, welfare has removed all moral components from assistance.
