Sen. Bernie Sanders didnt mince words on Tuesday when asked about the FBIs investigation into his wife calling it a pathetic and politically motivated attack, spurred by President Trump.
My wife is about the most honest person I know, the Vermont lawmaker told CNN.
All that I will tell you now is its a sad state of affairs in America when not only we have politicians being destroyed
but when you go after peoples wives. Thats pretty pathetic, he said.

Good question about how this started. Maybe the bank complained or reported to the FBI, back in January, Feb 2016, or earlier. Burlington College got the loan, got pledges, and then went bust in May 2016.
Somebody made a fraud allegation. My guess is that this originated with the bank, they are holding the bag.
Jane Sanders Hires Lawyers in DOJ Probe of Burlington College
Washington Free Beacon
A former Burlington employee who coordinated the school's response to an FBI subpoena in February 2016 said that she was contacted by Sanders's lawyers, VT Digger reports. The probe concerns a land deal Sanders conducted while she was president.

That's an interesting article, and notice it is more than a month old.

Aha! More details ...
... the Vermont Republicans and their vice-chairman Brady Toesning (sic). ...Enter the VTGOP vice-chairman. Toensing, also a junior partner at diGenova and Toensing, a DC law firm with a reputation for slinging mud at Democrats (Victoria Toensing, Brady's mother and senior partner at the firm, was a prominent voice from the right during the Benghazi boondoggle), filed a formal complaint in January of 2016, with the U.S. Attorney alleging willful misconduct by Sanders, which prompted the DOJ investigation into the school's closure.
There is a disconnect there. The school didn't close until May 2016, but setting that aside, the notice to DoJ is claimed to come from the VTGOP, Brady Toensing in particular.
-- Jeff Sessions, who had to approve this Jane No-Name for an FBI investigation --
No. Jeff Sessions was in the US Senate in that time frame. Not even yet part of the Trump primary campaign.
-- What is AG Sessions doing on the Clinton Foundation is my concern? --
If the DoJ is investigating that, it is doing so in secret. And if protocol is followed, the first we would hear about it is the day indictments are handed down.
I have a theory that Bernie threw his support behind Hillary and his supporters under the bus, because he knew he was going to need the Pardon Family Plan.
Thanks for the pre-Trump & pre-Sessions start date. The link above addressed the Vermont R Party generating the complaint. How it got to the FBI is the work of DiGenova and Toensing. The story left that dot out. The law firm was messing with the Obama Justice Department, with this filing.
Interesting how incoherent these stories are, lacking chronology and decent basic journalistic competency.
Thanks for filling in the blanks.

Although reporters largely ignored the letter at the time, Politico reports that a federal investigation was indeed launched. "Federal investigators and FBI agents started to pull apart the $10 million financial arrangement. They showed up at Burlington College to sift through hard drives, audit reports and spreadsheets. They began to interview donors, board members" and a past president, reported Politico, which added that a second letter to investigators accused Bernie Sanders's office of applying pressure to help his wife get the loan for the school.
Looks to me, applying the DEM standards used vs. Trump, that Bernie is obstructing justice.
I recommend the article.
I agree, and it doesn’t keep her from being guilty of bank fraud.
Based on what I can see this case is pretty simple. Shouldn’t take mo’s of investigating before charges are brought/dropped.
She either did/did not misrepresent the College’s ability to repay. That’s pretty much it and the answer should be found in the loan application. “Best evidence” is that the College went bankrupt and the Bank is out a lot of money.
Sucks to be you Ms. Sanders
