PHOENIX (AP) The political career of Joe Arpaio ended last year when the six-term sheriff of metro Phoenix known for cracking down on illegal immigration and housing inmates in tents outside in the desert heat was trounced in an election that focused on his own legal troubles.
Now, the 85-year-old who called himself Americas toughest sheriff will face his day of reckoning in court for defying a judges order to stop traffic patrols that targeted immigrants.
Arpaios trial starts Monday on a criminal contempt-of-court charge for prolonging the patrols for nearly a year and a half. The judge later found that Arpaios officers had racially profiled Latinos.

After this phrase, I stopped reading.
It was obvious where the article was headed and I had no desire to read the opinions of an obvious a*****e.
Joe Arpaio is one of my life's heroes. He was a Law enforcer and his job, just as a judge, if he does his job legally, ethically with justice for all, which certainly means so long as there is no inhumane punishment, Arpaio did his job exceptionally well.
One thing we can rely on, is that adult children, at humans who never mature past the child stage emotionally and psychologically will say the strangest things, even failing to grasp the distinction between a badass criminal with no conscience, an animal, and his victims, sometimes a normal human being.
Those strange ducks also revel in the handwringing due to the prisoners' hard lives, failing to note that the guards and other prison workers often bear the same discomforts as the guilty: extreme heat, isolation, boredom. As a Trumphater said recently, when referring to a Trump supporter, Boo Hoo Hoo!, a very useful, terse addition to my lexicon.
Got a letter from Mrs Arpaio, requesting donations. Sheriff needs 1 million dollars for his legal defense.
Yes. Trump should absolutely obstruct Democrat justice!
Especially since Sheriff Joe assisted multiple times on the 2016 campaign trail!
This to to rub in the short-circuit politically incorrect injustice of the pardon and make them bray and caterwaul all the louder!
The National Center for Police Defense (NCPD) recently hand delivered more than 40,000 petitions to U.S. Department of Justice to drop the charges against the former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Apaio. NCPD raised nearly $300,000 to help with Arpaio’s legal defense costs as he faces trail starting Mon., June 26, for contempt of court brought by the ACLU. NCPD will be onsite to monitor the trial as Arpaios fate will be solely decided by federal Judge Susan Bolton, unless the United States Supreme Court intervenes to allow Arpaio to have a jury trial. NCPD says this case has been political from the beginning when the Obama DOJ filed their misdemeanor charges against Arpaio just two weeks before the election. This action by the DOJ was a break in longtime tradition and protocol wherein the DOJ typically refrains from taking legal action against an elected official so close to an election in order to avoid influencing the outcome. With over 55 years of law enforcement experience, Sheriff Arpaio has always followed and enforced the laws on the books. Now, the DOJ wants to put him in prison for enforcing the very laws he swore an oath to uphold, saysJames Fotis, President of NCPD. “During his 24 years as Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arpaio enforced existing illegal immigration laws. Now the Department of Justice wants to put him behind bars for six months while the very illegal immigrants he has arrested over the years walk free. If the DOJ is successful in prosecuting Sheriff Joe Arpaio, it will be a huge miscarriage of justice and a clear example of political assassination by our federal government against a sitting local elected official. That sets a dangerous precedent and one Judge Bolton should reject. Contact: Cassandre Durocher with Shirley & Banister Public Affairs at (703) 739-5920
This was going on for years before the election. The man was 80 and his wife is sick. He should have stepped down and allowed another Republican to come up.
“Trump needs to give him a pardon. Then award a medal of freedom.”
Ping to Sheriff Arpaio trial notice...
Thanks for the ping!
