PHOENIX (AP) The political career of Joe Arpaio ended last year when the six-term sheriff of metro Phoenix known for cracking down on illegal immigration and housing inmates in tents outside in the desert heat was trounced in an election that focused on his own legal troubles.
Now, the 85-year-old who called himself Americas toughest sheriff will face his day of reckoning in court for defying a judges order to stop traffic patrols that targeted immigrants.
Arpaios trial starts Monday on a criminal contempt-of-court charge for prolonging the patrols for nearly a year and a half. The judge later found that Arpaios officers had racially profiled Latinos.

What did he do wrong?
I love Sheriff Joe. He has been a wonderful friend of Mohave County and I love his spunk and his spirit. Sheriff Joe should not have run for office this past election. His ego and pride got the best of him. Now Maricopa has a totally left wing Sheriff who is undoing all the good Joe had done and it will be tough to get him out and all of this crap. Sigh... I am praying hard for him and his wife.
He chose to obey federal law while the judge issued a ruling that violated federal law. Sheriff Joe’s backup team were/are afraid to lend support.
Is he ever going to release the data on Obama from the Cold Case Posse?
Trump, please pardon this patriot and hero. Then have him in the White House, boot DHS Sec. Kelly, replace him with Arpaio, and put a moratorium on H2Bs for at least 5 years to let Kelly know he was way off base in choosing globalists like Suckerberg and Gates over American workers.
Thanks for triggering my memory. I remember now that Sheriff Joe requested a jury and was denied.
It’s funny that western judges are ignoring the law in heir courtrooms now. I have a friend in So. Calif. that is preparing with a larger group to hatch a take-down of many corrupt judges. Their corruption has become blatant, in-your-face.
Sadly, including some FReepers. Don't remember exactly who but I've seen a number of FReepers condemning Joe.
A judgement for 1 man doing what 1,000s of others are doing quite legally in this country. Sad.
Isn’t this a vendetta against Sheriff Joe by Murray Snow? Maricopa County is going to suffer because we don’t have him as our sheriff. I’m so fed up with the politics of it all.
Something has to be done or all of Trumps work is for not.
There are a lot of trolls, paid operatives, and Democrat 0bummer/hitlery lovers on FReeRepublic. Just ignore them.
Is it a federal or state charge?
Trump can’t pardon a state charge.
Oh, I’m well aware...been here a long time.
Prayers for Sheriff Joe......May God be with him and protect him.
He did, in DC, they ran like a scalded dog
I didn’t see it. I’m talking about the “Big Reveal” from Zullo.
The judge is an idiot! What percentage of illegal immigrants living in the southwest are Amish? How about of Irish or German heritage? Maybe British? Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, I'm guessing that 99.5% of them are Latinos.
I can understand how American citizens of Latino heritage would be offended if they were roused by the cops but the fact is that we're being invaded by Latinos from south of the boarder. Our federal government has done nothing practical to stop it - or to help authorities more easily identify American citizens and illegals. We're being invaded and the Sheriff did what makes perfect sense considering the feckless in Washington.
The judge is a PC idiot who lacks common-sense and critical thinking skills, which means the judge is a democrat.
Is this a federal trial? I didn’t see what court was involved in the article.
Federal
thanks ... it is a poorly written article and I never saw the name of the court or the judge whose order was allegedly disregarded. Hope Arpaio skates on this one.
