If the cutoff does not work, gasoline will go flying all over the place when the tank is filled.
Not too long ago I used a gas pump which had the latch. When I’d filled enough I tried to release the latch. It was jammed or caught in the slot. Pulling up the handle did not release it. Then the tank filled and the auto-shutoff malfunctioned. Gas began gushing out. It took pulling the metal latch up with one set of fingers while pulling the handle up with the other to shut it off. A few days later I pass the station and see the pump with a red plastic bag over it.
IMO only an imbecile walks away from a running gas pump. And it’s a lazy lout that fills his gas then leaves the vehicle at the pump to go do his business in the store.
