As search and rescue crews gained access to the spaces that were damaged during the collision this morning, the missing Sailors were located in the flooded berthing compartments. Looks like the Cargo ship went out of its way to hit the Fitzgerald
Not sure how the Fitz could have anticipated this or had time to react and get out of the way at 2:30 in the morning

No one has determined from the AIS plot when the collision occurred. The Crystal is going very slowly during part of it that looks so screwy, likely trying to render assistance.

Ignore the sensationalists that want to see something there without any info.

My hunch is the first starboard turn is where the collision happened, the rest was the ship trying to get it figured out, then coming back to help.

Not if they were on a roughly parallel course ( after the contained ships sharp turn inland) and the Crystal, was overtaking the ither vessel,

So I say again: If our state of the art fleet can't fend off a 29,000 ton (58 million pound) lumbering container ship, we should just discharge the sailors, sink the ships, and spend our money on something useful.

BTW, what does 2:30 in the morning have to do with anything?

It’s fishy. I think the cargo ship turned into path of the destroyer.

Hopefully the details and the truth will slowly be revealed.

Do they have the other crew and are they being detained?

Your reading of the AIS track is much the same as mine. From the time ticks, it looks like the Crystal was cruising at around 17 knots prior to the collision.

I am enjoying the wild interpretations of the track here.

Is the course corrections before or after collision. I have seen several depictions of this track but no clarity about just when the collision occurred.

O God of spirits and of all flesh, Who hast trampled down death and overthrown the Devil, and given life to Thy world, do Thou, the same Lord, give rest to the souls of Thy departed servants in a place of brightness, a place of refreshment, a place of repose, where all sickness, sighing, and sorrow have fled away. Pardon every transgression which they have committed, whether by word or deed or thought. For Thou art a good God and lovest mankind; because there is no man who lives yet does not sin, for Thou only art without sin, Thy righteousness is to all eternity, and Thy word is truth.

For Thou are the Resurrection, the Life, and the Repose of Thy servants who have fallen asleep, O Christ our God, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, together with Thy Father, who is from everlasting, and Thine all-holy, good, and life-creating Spirit, now and ever unto ages of ages. Amen.

Read down through this thread for excellent commentary from former and current Naval Officers who have stood the watch and know what the Fitzgerald watch standers were facing.

My boat had 25 mile radius scan. We continually watched the screen while on the water. How in hell did this happen to a Navy ship?

Something about this stinks to high heaven!!

I agree. This class of ship's bread and butter is it's huge radar array and ability to fire it's Phalanx® weapon system driven by that radar. Pretty sophisticated ring of defense.

Sails at 30+ knots and can not avoid a 14 knot container ship?

I had three uncles at Guadalcanal, one on shore and two off shore. Thank God all came home safe.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4614624/Young-sailor-identified-one-seven-missing-sea.html

The container ships first turn was to port and then almost 180
Right into the location of the Fitzgerald
Very odd track for a huge container ship

The Japanese Coast Guard is investingating “ professional negligence”

8 years of Obama screwing up the military with social engineering. We’re going to need to fire a lot officers promoted under him.

Thanks for that. I don't think anyone who has never tried it has a clue how incredibly disorienting night maneuvering can be. What we have is one-half of the track data. It isn't enough to even begin to draw any conclusions.

As to why the captain of the cargo ship conducted that maneuver, the board of inquiry will...ask him. A ship running at 17 knots doing that can be on you so fast it's hard to believe. Been there, done that.

I think you are having difficulty reading an AIS track. Nowhere on the track is the Fitzgerald position identified.

But then you are likely just looking at a screen cap of the recorded track, right?
