I would suspect a large venous blood clot. This is not that uncommon with major trauma. They go to the heart and then out the right ventricle and lodge in the lungs. Dependent on severity it can kill you.

Stable but critical are not mutually exclusive. Stable means his vitals have reached a controlled state. He is most likely receiving blood. His surgery was probably very complex. He needs the care of an ICU unit not the med surg ward
