WE, GENEVA RESIDENTS CONCERNED ABOUT THE POISONED FOUNDRY ZONE, DEMAND: An apology from the city government to the community
All communications from the city about the foundry zone in both English and Spanish, and an interpreter at council meetings
Signage and fencing on the foundry site alerting people of the contamination there
An immediate public and independent investigation of what the city knew, when they knew it, and why they didnt tell residents
Private residences must be decontaminated before the foundry site
No new development before our neighbors are cared for
The city must inform every resident in the contamination zone (by certified mail), place a list of contaminated properties in local newspapers, and post information about the contamination and cleanup in rental residences
The city arrange a plan for cleanup with every landlord in the zone within one month
The clean up of the entire zone must be completed by March 2018 (before the next growing season)
Free medical and soil testing for all affected residents
Free healthcare for all impacted residents
Free access to nearby, supervised, outdoor spaces for children
Free access to nearby fruits and vegetables
Free space nearby for a community garden (e.g. raised beds), with soil, fertilizer, seeds, and tools provided
Free testing and admission to dog parks for pets
Tax relief and rent holiday until each contaminated property is cleaned up
Compensation of back taxes covering the time between when the city knew of the contamination and when it informed the residents
The immediate formation of an Environmental Justice Council comprised of Geneva residents who haveby virtue of their participation in organized actions around these issuesthe knowledge and experience necessary to protect our communal living space from environmental threats, past, present, and future.
