Canada’s foreign minister said Tuesday that the country must spend more on its military now that the U.S. is questioning its role of global leadership.

Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland told Parliament that relying on the “the U.S. security umbrella would make us a client state.”

She said Canada is committed to make a “substantial investment” in its military and said the defense minister would elaborate on that Wednesday.

Freeland said Canadians will always be grateful for the outsized role the U.S. has played in the world and Canada will seek to persuade Washington that its continued leadership is in the interest of the U.S. and the free world.

She didn’t mention President Donald Trump by name, but reiterated Canada’s disappointment in Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. …

Myanmar, Macedonia or Ghana could defeat Canada without us protecting them.

All I know is that when my Canadian friends come down for the winter, they load up on vodka and whiskey before heading home in the spring.

Try lowering your taxes CA, maybe your people would spend their money at home.

And any time a nation of 33 million has 90+% of its population living on the border with its neighbor, economic and other ties will be close. Mexico has its population centers in the south, around Mexico City. Not even comparable.

What they’re saying is that they want the USA to be on the receiving end of whatever they are planning to do militarily. They’re being very transparent about it now.

Interesting verb tenses here. She treats being a client state as a future possibility. But by her logic hasn’t Canada been a client state for decades?

More “us versus them” rhetoric. Freeland, as a former journalistic hack at Reuters and now a political hack for the Liberal Party, uses this as her forte.

....”What “Free World”???? We’re being spied on 24/7.....like East Germany.”.....

People are use to it as we see every day....if US citizens didn’t want this it wouldn’t be so....just like with abortion.....voting still matters....or at least we think it does for awhile longer.

“Canada is committed to make a “substantial investment” in its military”

that’s gonna blow the Canadian carbon “budget” completely out of the water.

What little equipment that they have is so old that US Civil War reenactors could probably take Ottawa before they knew what happened.

So let me guess, they are going to buy more bicycles for their troops and a new row boat for their navy. I fell a whole lot safer now. Enemies of Canada must be hiding under their covers, shaking in their boots.

Canada has one border, and that’s with us. Who do they think is coming to invade them? For extra fun, isn’t this basically a tacit admission they’ve been freeloaders on us defending them?

Reword it like this. My neighbor has stopped using his smoker as often. With less brisket and chicken from him, I’ll be forced to cook more meals for my family.

The definition of freeloader.

“Freeland said Canada must do its fair share and dismissed those who are reluctant to spend billions on the military because Canada could “free ride on U.S. military power.””

That’s the ticket Freeland, the free ride is over. We don’t mind being a partner, but being your security blanket on our nickel is done!

“Chrystia Freeland told Canada’s House of Commons that Washington is no longer committed to its position of world leadership, forcing Canada to invest in its own armed forces to defend liberal democracy.”

We are not going to be in the business of “defending liberal democracy” because there’s really no such thing.

This is true. Even Woodrow Wilson admitted it back in 1887:
The thesis of the state socialist is that no line can be drawn between private and public affairs which the State may not cross at will; that omnipotence of legislation is the first postulate of all just political theory. […]

[I]t is very clear that in fundamental theory, socialism and democracy are almost, if not quite, one and the same. They both rest at bottom upon the absolute right of the community to determine its own destiny and that of its members. Men as communities are supreme over men as individuals.
So, when people talk of “democracy”, things like individual liberty and omnipotence of God alone are out the window, to replaced by omnipotence of the state and legislation, as well as the community being more important than the individual.
