The detective who investigated the case in 1995 described King's injuries as "minor". The associated police report noted that the incident revolved around a fight involving only one other student who defended his girlfriend after being allegedly threatened by King. The report did not indicate the incident was racially motivated. There is no mention of a "hate crime" either with local police or with the FBI.[48][51] Keith Broughton, the investigating detective, said he interviewed six witnesses put forth by the school's principal, including a teacher who broke up the fight. All of them described it as a one-on-one altercation.[48]

Questions regarding race
In August 2015, conservative websites questioned King's biracial identity based on information from King's birth certificate which lists Naomi Fleming and Jeffrey Wayne King as Shaun King's parents, both of whom are white.[1]"
Shaun is a gauster....
Hangin’ Around
by Yipes!
Compositor: Bartel, McCurdy
Jack is a gauster
My black and white friend
He knows it’s much too late for a change
So he’s got to pretend
With a cap on his head
Platform shoes on his feet
There’s no operation
Can make him complete
Chorus
He’s hangin’ around at the Club Detroit
He’s hangin’ around the Flame Room
He sticks up, he sticks out
He gets up, he gets out
I feel so sorry for him
He’s hangin’ around but he don’t fit in
Could have been a hoodlum
Could’ve had a car
I don’t really know who’s the one who decided
What we do and what we are
So he learns how to dance
And he practice the stroll
He buys clothing on time
Jack’s got soul!
Chorus
Now Jack is a gauster
He’s feeling alright
He’s a little unhappy
‘Cause his parents were white
The disco connection
He looks for the groove
He’s hangin’ around
He wants to be smooth
Jack just wants to be smooth
He’s hangin’ around at the Club Detroit
He’s hangin’ around in a Banlon shirt
He’s hangin’ around in his Coupe de Ville
He’s hangin’ around the Flame Room
He sticks up, he sticks out
He gets up, he gets out
I feel so sorry for him
He’s hangin’ around but he don’t fit in
