US will continue to reduce greenhouse emissions, says Tillerson

Washington (AFP) - Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Friday the United States will pursue unilateral efforts to curb greenhouse emissions, despite pulling out of the Paris accord.

As he welcomed Brazil's Foreign Minister Aloysio Nunes to Washington, Tillerson boasted that the US has a "terrific record" in reducing the emissions blamed for global warming.

But, in a nod to concerns that US global leadership has been damaged by the decision to quit the Paris deal, he urged partners "to keep it in perspective."

Reports suggest Tillerson was one of the advisors who counselled President Donald Trump not to pull Washington from the accord, fearing a blow to US influence abroad.

But if that was the case, the former oil executive put a brave face on the decision, which has seen Europe and China pull together to renew their support for the 2015 agreement.

"That was a policy decision," Tillerson told reporters.

NOT what I want to hear from SOS. Under Obama, State killed the Keystone pipeline.

If State has to chime in, then it would be better to hear “We are taking the chains off coal. We are going to use our abundant natural resources to lower the cost of electricity for all Americans. Rates have soared through these misguided “green energy” programs and Americans are suffering. We are going to ignite American dominance with low energy rates from coal power.”

I think it means we are going to keep doing what we were doing on antipollution but without a Paris accord deeming what it is we will be doing. I understand the foreign influence stuff he was trying to convey but thone same countries were already dissing pot us before this. Signing that would have put us at more financial burdening, like nato. Everyone promises money but only the u.s. and very few others are pulling the boat...

The Constitution reserves to Congress the power of the purse. The President CANNOT obligate the U.S. for anything. There is a sense in which we were never in the Paris Agreement to begin with.

With regard to emissions, the trajectory is lower as we are using more propane. This has nothing to do with climate change.

In a crazy way, we may be able to frack our way to lowering emissions even more. CO2 can be captured at our power plants, piped to oil and natural gas fields and used to frack the fields. The whole thing pays for itself (the cost of using CO2 to frack is recovered in increased production of oil and natural gas) and makes fossil fuels carbon neutral.

And who knows what kind of energy we’ll be using In 30 to 50 years. Maybe thorium-based reactors.

“Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Friday the United States will pursue unilateral efforts to curb greenhouse emissions,
Hey Don! Why is this idiot part of your administration?”

This isn’t idiocy, we’ve been lowering our emission for 8 years straight by doing one smart thing.

Allowing fracking of clean natural gas. And Trump will open more areas to production.

That’s why we can tell Europe to talk to us when they catch up.

We’ve been lowering it and will continue, while producing affordable energy and producing jobs. See my comment just above this one.

Exactly, and that’s why lowering emissions is just fine. we are producing affordable and cleaner energy while producing more jobs.

It’s called win-win and the knee-jerk reactions against it are silly and uninformed.

That’s O.K., although I question its wisdom. Plants need the carbon di to grow. Experiments have proven, the more they have, the faster and more fruitful they are. Since carbon di is a mere 0.04% (Less than one-twentieth of 1%) of Earth’s atmosphere, the whole exercize seems silly. I’m sad to see T-Rex fall for that scam.

Tillerson is a continuation of John Kerry and Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.

I hope Rex means we’ll proceed to increase fracking and production of natural gas, including exports on a global scale. That could drastically reduce co2 emissions, a fig leaf really, but it makes economic sense to me.

And our numbers would look good since it’s appearances that matter, apparently, not anything truly meaningful.

And the slush fund, which is what the world is really squawking about, they can fund the thing all they want with their own taxpayer money.

The idea that carbon dioxide is a pollutant and the idea that reducing our emissions thereof are a "good thing" to reduce "climate change" are blatant idiocy.

Tillerson is either a liar or an idiot.
