What the House Subpoenas of Rice, Brennan, and Power in the ‘Unmasking’ Probe Mean
NRO ^ | Andrew McCarthy

It’s not all about Russia. The House Intelligence Committee has reportedly issued seven subpoenas in connection with its investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and of the Obama administration’s potentially illegal use of the government’s foreign-intelligence-collection power for the purpose of monitoring Americans — in particular, Americans connected to the Trump campaign and transition.

The news was broken Wednesday afternoon by the Wall Street Journal.

The most intriguing detail of the subpoenas is the demand for any information related to requests for unmasking by Samantha Power, President Obama’s ambassador to the United Nations.

*snip*

Were there to be information indicating that Ms. Power was involved in unmasking American identities in intelligence reports, significant questions would be raised. As ambassador to the U.N., Power, a long-time Obama adviser, held a diplomatic position. She was not an intelligence analyst. It is not immediately clear why the U.N. ambassador would be involved in the disclosure of American identities in intelligence reports — after the agencies that collected and analyzed the intelligence had decided such identities should be masked.

We’ve known for a long time that Rice and Brennan are stinking polecats but Powers kind of dropped out of the blue. Nail their a$$es.

Trey Gowdy asked Brennan if unmasking was requested by an ambassador. Brennan was clearly not expecting this question and fumbled an answer. I saw this response on twitter but can’t find it at the moment. Obviously Gowdy already knew about Powers.

While many have been disheartened over Gowdy's lack of power to do what we (and I believe he) want(s), I think he sees an opportunity to turn the tables on the Dems. His questions to Brennan feel like he's setting things up to try to really get to the bottom of things.

Here's hoping I'm right (I'm about due to come in out of left field....)

AG Sessions should have a Grand Jury at the ready. Dems are never going to turn over records. Indict as soon as they stall. A secondary question may be, Why can’t Trump access these records and/or have his own qualified staff do same. Should be a no brainer.

I hope they throw Samantha Power in the pokey. She previously called for American boots on the ground in Israel.

Nail their a$$es.

Absolutely they should but Republicans never hold anyone accountable for anything. Its all just a bunch of political theater. They know how to fool the masses and trick them into voting for them.

Congress doesn't have the power to do anything but apply sunshine, and they aren't necessarily keen on that role either.

Misleading headline in that none of the people named (in the headline) are under subpoena. The FBI, CIA and NSA are, and the agencies have been asked to produce information, in particular, information relating to unmasking requests submitted by those named.

The inclusion of Power's name on the subpoenas marks the first appearance of the former U.N. ambassador in the controversy surrounding the Obama administration's use of unmasking. Capitol Hill sources told Fox News they are devoting increasing scrutiny to Power - a former historian and winner of the Pulitzer Prize who worked as a foreign policy adviser in the Senate office of Barack Obama before joining his administration - because they have come to see her role in the unmasking as larger than previously known, and eclipsing those of the other former officials named.

Seems to be the case. I will say though, much of the disappointment I read on FR is due to misplaced expectations.

One of the reasons the GOP Congressional hearings have been worthless, is that the Obama DOJ and FBI gave a pass to the criminal activity that was disclosed.

Until now, Gowdy’s been muzzled by the political system and lack of desire by the Congress to actually do anything - he had no actual power to do any of the things he essayed to do in the past and we blamed him instead of the system that he is forced to work under. The fact that he’s back to plugging away at things is encouraging.
