SOUTH ORANGE, New Jersey (WABC) -- A group of middle school students from New Jersey caused quite a flap, after half of them refused to take a picture with Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan.
It happened Thursday during a field trip to Washington.
Reaction from the students' parents are as politically divided as the country.
"It's not just a picture," said Matthew Malespina, a student.
Matthew says he couldn't go through with it.
It didn't matter that Paul Ryan is the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, or that he is third in-line to the presidency.
When he and his classmates from South Orange Middle School had the chance to take a picture with the speaker. Matthew watched from the parking lot with 100 of his fellow students.

Bet she ordered 3 copies of, “Heather Has Two Mommies” for the school library.
I obey the law, respect is earned and nontransferable.
They have to be carefully taught....
Obamy and Clock Boy.
That’s in the Armed Forces; its a whole different hierarchy. They have agreed to respect rank by joining the organization and they need to because they have to instantly obey people they may not even know, in war or emergency situations.
Two peas in a pod.
I wouldn't say proud, but I would consider it childish not to extend respect to the Office.
These parents are raising good lil Commies..even though I am NO fan of Paul Ryan, he is the Speaker of the House and I would have my kid pose in a picture with him..ya see Paul, as much as you suck up to liberals they will NEVER be your friends EVER
“Something they could have kept forever and passed down”
Pall Ryno? I don’t think so.
Parents are doing a lousy job
It is good for honest folks to agree to disagree sometimes.
I respect your reasoning and agree with the respect but parse it differently.
I respect the office too much not to shun Ryan because of his disrespect for that office & for the American people.
We were taught in the Army that, even if he’s a pluperfect bastard, you are saluting the rank, not the officer
I don’t think I’d pose for a picture with Ryan either.
But for different reasons, since he’s a traitorous Democrat a lot of the time.
That grade doesn’t know anything about politics that was the parents talking
“Its their loss
How many kids get to take a picture with the Speaker of the House?”
I’m sure if you checked with former House Speaker Dennis Hastert, he could tell you exactly how many kids got their picture taken with him.

That's gonna leave a mark.
I also want to note that especially this election cycle people have been judged by who they stood with in old photos. Photos of people shaking hands have been used to suggest that the individuals were friendly with, in accord with, aligned with each other. That’s where the saying “I stand with” comes from; it equals support and alliance.
I do not stand with Paul Ryan. I donated to Nehlen last cycle and will again. It would be hypocrisy &/or cowardice for me to be photographed with him...It should be noted I have been called stubborn and uncompromising...by friends.
And all this time, I thought the Speaker of the House was second in line for the Presidency. Thanks ABC. That Constitution thing is so confusing.
Ryan didn’t go to their school, they were on a field trip to DC and somehow the photo-op presented itself to the class. Brainwashing them early these days, and leaving out that whole manners thing.
