People always accuse the South of continuing to fight the Civil War, because they are sore losers. In fact it has ALWAYS been the North who is continuing to refight the Civil War, because they are sore winners.
Congress passed some kind of official resolution in the late 1950s to create a commission to observe the centennial of the Civil War. During 1961-1965 it was a really big deal through-out the southern states of the old Confederacy. Not so much in the northern states of the old Union mainly because only Antietam and Gettysburg were fought on Union ground. Of course, the UDC (United Daughters of the Confederacy) had fund-raised and sprinkled the entire south with Confederate memorials to its war dead.
Sadly, this CW Centennial observance occurred at the same time as the flood tide of the black civil rights movement. The Centennial observance accidentally revived "The South will again" sentiment in "the Lost Cause", and bitter resentment to the Reconstruction era and the civil rights movement.
Remember this guy from the 1960s-1970s in the South?
We recently finished the observance of the CW Sesquicentennial. It barely made a ripple in news converage, even in the deep South.
including the usual crowd of FR South-haters.
Odd that they aren’t showing up to celebrate this victory by the Taliban Left.
