I was a BusAdm grad in the early 1960’s. I had 2 semesters of computer programming and 18 hours of accounting. In the spring semester of my senior year, there was a big job fair, and I had a job offer from one of the computer makers before the fair.
Out of curiosity, I went to the job fair. While talking to one of the companies, the top FBI agent for that area came up to me and wanted to talk me. We took a walk and talked.
He knew a lot of about me. After a few minutes, I asked him if new hires, who weren’t lawyers or accountants could be hired as future agents.
He said that was changing. Since I had a couple of secret clearances from summer jobs that was a big step. He/they knew that I had several hours of accounting and the computer science classes. He said that by the fall, I could be hired as an agent with the computer classes and working for the computer company. I told him thanks but no thanks. He gave me his card.
I went to work for the computer company and quit about 6 months later as they were heading me into what would called IT later. I hated it and resigned.
A couple of weeks after quitting the computer company, I got a call from this man. He said that I could be hired as a prospective agent. I told him no thanks at that time. Then, he offered to be a reference for any job or future military service. I thanked him.
I did use him as a reference. Later, I realized that was a way for him to keep track of me. At that time, the FBI was looked on as an elite group of good people.
