Lauded rocker Chris Cornell killed himself by hanging

DETROIT — Chris Cornell, one of the most lauded and respected contemporary lead singers in rock music with his bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, hanged himself Wednesday in a Detroit hotel room, according to the city’s medical examiner. He was 52.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office said Thursday it completed the preliminary autopsy on Cornell, but that “a full autopsy report has not yet been completed.” A police spokesman told two Detroit newspapers that the singer was found with a band around his neck.

Cornell’s death stunned his family and his die-hard fans, who Cornell just performed for hours earlier at a show in Detroit. Soundgarden’s current tour kicked off in late April and was planned to run through May 27. He was found dead at the MGM Grand Detroit hotel by a family friend who went to his room after Cornell’s wife asked him to check on the singer, police said.

Cornell was a leader of the grunge movement with Seattle-based Soundgarden — with whom he gained critical and commercial acclaim — but also found success outside the band with other projects, including Audioslave, Temple of the Dog as well as solo albums. He was widely respected in the music industry: He reached success in every band lineup he was part of it, his voice was memorable and powerful, and he was a skilled songwriter, even collaborating on a number of film soundtracks, including the James Bond theme song for 2006′s “Casino Royale” and “The Keeper” from the film “Machine Gun Preacher,” which earned Cornell a Golden Globe nomination.

“To create the intimacy of an acoustic performance there needed to be real stories. They need to be kind of real and they need to have a beginning, middle and an end,” Cornell said of songwriting in a 2015 interview...

Also a personal acquaintance.

His wife is saying some anxiety medication he took may have affected him with this and that seems about right. This was shocking.

One of the best voices of my generation. Sad.

Black hole sun I’ve played about a million times myself on YouTube.

Junior Seau, Robin Williams, and now Chris — obamahole libdems who reached the top but commited suicide anyway. I’m trying to generate a list of successful conservatives who commited suicide, but the list is empty. If anything, these successful-yet-suicidal libs should serve as cautionary tales against libholism.

Anxiety drug he was prescribed might have given him paranoid and suicide thoughts. His wife says she talked to him after show and he was slurring his words and said he took too many. Seems sad overdose that brought this on. He seemed to have everything to live for and was making Memorial Day plans with family.

OK, need some clarification here...

My metal/rock era was Led Zeppelin, et al from the late 60's to early 70's. It was then (in 1973) that I/we had (and continue to have!) a complete life-changing encounter with Jesus. Since then I have known of bands and music styles but strictly as a matter of knowledge, not preferred taste.

So with Cornell, I would identify his music as being dark grunge/metal (in contrast with death metal...) where there is always a note of despair in this life (imagine that...!)

Why aren't Cornell's fans and followers celebrating his death? Not trying to be a smart(bleep) or snarky about this but I wonder about the music "hero's of despair"...when they do themselves in...their followers mourn, instead of rejoice.

That said...very sad that he (or anyone) goes through this earth life without having a new creation, 2Corinthians 5:17 experience.

Anyone check on Eddie Vedder to see if he’s ok, he’s the last one standing from that era.

The most important fact will be how he hung himself. That is, if he was clothed and out in the open it means one thing, but if he was naked in a closet, like Michael Hutchence of INXS, it will mean something else entirely.

When my youngest daughter was in 1st grade a few years ago, her class went on a field trip in which parents were encouraged to attend. One of her classmate’s dad and I spent much of that day together, following our daughters, taking pictures and chatting. I had just gone through a divorce and he was in the early stages of one. He was friendly, talkative and seemingly eager to be a friend. Nice guy.

He took his life less than a week later.

Only in retrospect did I realize that his friendliness was probably a cry for help. He was reaching out for someone to be an anchor in a world that was spinning out of control. If I had been more perceptive, I would have seen the desperation in his eyes; his quiet pleading for someone to throw him a lifeline.

His daughter and mine graduated 5th grade yesterday. It was a beautiful ceremony and his little girl, who has grown like a flower, was resplendent in her graduation dress. She is precious and has his smile. I hoped I wasn’t the only one in the audience thinking of him.

Every time I see his little girl, I regret not inviting him for coffee, or something, so he could have unloaded his burdens to someone who had been through his situation and understood. I regret being too preoccupied with work or my problems.

Who knows how many people cross our paths who could use an encouraging word or some unsolicited sympathy?

I am sick of these poor toutured geniuses killing themselves, with drugs or suicide. They reach the pinnacle of their professions, money, admiration and a family, then they destroy it all out of selfishness.. Robin Williams, Cobane and so many others......

My attitude doesn’t come from pity for them but for everyone they leave in their wake. F’em.

He sang a Bond theme. He could, indeed, sing. That’s a fact.

I'm certain Vedder's hatred of Trump keeps him going.

Louder than love was awesome. Anyone says otherwise didn’t hear it.
One of my favorite albums. I put burden link in because I think some other commenters need to hear it.

Listening now to one of my favorites from the “Stone Free” Hendrix tribute album. “M.A.C.C.-Hey Baby”. RIP but that may prove difficult having taken the coward’s way out.

I was never into grunge, but his suicide unnerves me. I pray for his family and friends. They must be distraught.

"Of all the grunge acts, only Pearl Jam was able to stay relevant through changing musical tastes, primarily because they didn't allow themselves to be defined by one particular genre."

I would put Dave Grohl in that same category. He went from a founding member of Nirvana to the founder of Foo Fighters after Cobain died and was very successful in each endeavor.
