John says we're up but we still have some configuration problems, but they're going to have to wait until he gets home (3 hours). His laptop is not working and the only way he can get in is by his phone and that's giving errors. He's afraid others on mobile devices may be getting errors too. We're on a new version of the db software now and apparently there are some compatibility issues. And we're sporting some new drives including a new SSD (solid state) drive. Should be working pretty good after he works out the configuration problems, then he has to finish the sha-256 installation for security for credit cards. Then on to a total redesign of the system. It never ends.
Thank you all very much for hanging in there with us.
God bless.
Yeah, "the cloud" is just a bunch of warehouses full of large servers. They should call it "the warehouse", but that doesn't sound as cool.
Exactly. If I have a drive failure on the other side of the ocean, we know immediately from automated notifications and simply have the duty engineer swap the drive with a new one which is inside the cage itself. It’s almost instantaneous.
We all love you and Jim, and John, you are doing fine!
All of us who know something about computers know that you are not spending money on the infrastructure of the site. There is no way this site should have been down that long.
You either need to hire someone who knows what they are doing or plan on more of the same.
Every single time something big happens the site goes down.
Other sites don’t go down.
There is not THAT much traffic on this site. Yes, a lot, but nothing like many other sites.
A LOT of money is raised each year in your fund raisers.
Maybe spend some of the money on the site.
The problem is not lack of money lol
Try deleting the first '3' in the current thread's URL.
If John is not making backups, that should get you a 404. Or take you back to 2001 if he is.
Not a tech and don’t have modern Apple stuff so I googled iOS 10.3.1
Others may not be familiar with it either so here is a search link

This site works to let us know when FR is down...
http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/freerepublic.com.html
There is mention of FR creating it’s own cloud.
I don’t use the cloud, because everything is mirrored there if you do.
And there are evil “cloud” demons that would love to access personal info on everyone, starting with the Deep State gov.
I’m still not sure exactly what the “cloud” is, but it must be physical servers somewhere I guess.
Just happy FR is back on the air! Thanks to all involved for your efforts!
It’s my understanding that if the hardware equipment were in Fresno that it would have to route through San Jose (apparently the closest location with a direct route to performance) and that would slow down the works.
But wadda I know? heh...
I became a master at doing upgrades, re-configuring lines/hardware remotely since making those trips all the time is time-consuming. I still had to go when those locations moved offices, for Y2K testing (some vendors wouldn't certify hardware so things had to be replaced/upgraded) and things like that, but fixing things (simply replacing drives, os upgrades, application upgrades, etc.) could mostly be done remotely with the help of non-techincal people on the other end to push a button, slide a drive in, etc.
It always took nerves of steel to type in that "shutdown -r" command to reboot... and my blood pressure always went sky high waiting to be able to telnet or dial back in when it's up. But I did it countless times and it always worked.
Redundant hardware is necessary if your stuff is mission critical, few people bother with backups as if hard drives last forever. Saying that I have some computers over 10 years old that have original hard drives. On the other hand I have a refrigerator door full of Super Magnets from newer hard drives. The bigger the drive the more susceptible to failure at least in my use.
If there are any problems Jim, they will iron themselves out. What counts is that you are back on and running. Thanks to you and John for all your hard work. I am so glad you are back! God bless.
You don’t understand the concept of a backup.
Here’s something to think about: if John had backups of the servers, why did it take five days to get the site back online? Let’s say for the sake of argument that the hardware completely melted into one or more piles of molten slag. How long would it take to unbox new servers and restore from backup? Sure as Hell not five days!
Thanks to you and John for your tireless work in getting FR back up.
Because of your dedication, some kind of balance has been restored to this wild and crazy political scene.
Latest iOS 10.3.2 working OK also.
Yay, thanks Jim and John!
iOS 10.3.2 is only a few days old.
Thanks for the info
So the “i” designates Apple and OS of course Operating System.
Does it work on non Apple products?
