Four U.S. states have sued Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, the Interior Department and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to block new leases of public lands for coal mining, according to papers filed on Tuesday in Montana federal court.
State prosecutors for California, New Mexico, New York and Washington are arguing new coal extraction would exacerbate global warming and violate the federal government's statutory duty to use public lands "in a manner that will protect the quality of scientific, scenic, historical, ecological, environmental, air and atmospheric, water resource, and archaeological values," according to the filings.
The move was one of several recent attempts to block a broad pledge by U.S. President Donald Trump to roll back environmental regulations put in place under former President Barack Obama. The former president placed a moratorium on new coal mining leases on public lands more than a year ago, in January 2016.
On March 29, Zinke, whom Trump appointed Interior secretary, formally lifted the ban.

By the way, just how much coal mining goes on in CA, NM, NY, and WA?
These clowns have no standing, especially the state of California, which just needs to be kicked out of the US already.
If the US had its own version of Venezuela, or failed narco-state mexico, California would be it.
Let’s start petitions to stop importation of any “non-renewable” power into these states.
Perhaps we can talk terrorist green groups into blowing up out of state power lines.
I’m guessing not that much in NY and quite a bit in NM.
A state can be quite blue in parts but still have significant resources and people who want to use those resources.
I know. I grew up in a timber county in Oregon.
I’m guessing that this has more to do with shielding the current coal mining interests from competition, and in turn, keep the prices of coal propped up via artificial scarcity.
After obama waged his “war on coal”, and bankrupted nearly every coal mining company in the US, guess who was going around snapping those companies and claims for pennies on the dollar?
These “judges” in these states need to have the DOJ go up their asses with a microscope, and be investigated for collusion and bribery.
The left’s quest to rule by judicial fiat continues.
