Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed to hold talks with Trump in Washington (United Arab Emirates)

ABU DHABI -- Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, will hold talks with US president Donald Trump in Washington on Monday.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said the meeting is aimed at deepening Washington’s cooperation with a key Middle East partner. The meeting is scheduled to take place a week before Mr Trump makes the first overseas trip of his presidency, to Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Vatican.

The high-level diplomacy with Abu Dhabi and Riyadh underscores the reset in relations between the GCC powers and the US under Mr Trump.

The US president has sought to strengthen ties with key regional partners to achieve the core objectives of defeating ISIL and other extremist groups, containing Iran, and brokering an elusive peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.

Despite differences over Iran and other regional challenges during former US president Barack Obama’s tenure, the UAE was regarded as the most reliable and capable Arab partner, particularly on counter-terrorism, and the relationship with Washington is set to become even closer.

I hope he turns a deaf ear to this bloke who is a funder of ISIS and AlQaida - they all are - those Gulf States.

How discouraging that Trump is making his first visit overseas to Saudi Arabia. He should go someplace better.

It’s probably mostly about defeating ISIS. We don’t need their oil, we have plenty.

Will the Sheik and Trump be walking around holding hands the way W. did?

Quite the opposite. Both ISIS and AQ would love to put his head, as well as those of his family and that of the other Emirs and their families on a spike.

The Emiratis, along with the Kuwaitis have mutual enmities with us. Iran covets control of the Gulf and its oil on one hand. On the other, the competing Sunni extremists (ISIS, AQ, Muslim Brotherhood, etc...) consider them hopelessly compromised by Western contamination.

What the media won’t tell you is that the Gulf states were glad Trump won the election. They think that he will make and honor a good deal. Unlike Obama and Clinton, who were considered flaky and untrustworthy. The Iran deal hit these countries hard, as they think Obama screwed their interests over to curry favor with the Mullahs.

2ID, ISIS is part of it, Iran is the bigger issue. Plus they are building a budding financial center. The Emirs understand they will run out of oil and are trying to diversify. Trump’s tax plan helps them by making it easier (less regulations) to handle American citizen accounts.

Just got back from the UAE, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and also Oman, and fellow Americans, you would be SHOCKED at how beautiful their cities are, and the buildings are UNBELIEVABLE!! We have NOTHING that compares, not in NY or Chicago.......plus the people we came in contact with were all very nice, and the mosques were GORGEOUS.

These people are NOT our enemies....it's OTHER muslims from other countries.

Yes and no. There are Islamist sympathizers, and there are sporadic incidents, but the Emirs are both in charge and respected by the bulk of the population. Probably safer than some parts of Paris these days.
