I have seen more people here say the President has the ability to fire him than not. But you’re right, many here said the President couldn’t fire him.

If I put on my genius hat and think like 3-D chess master Trump, I fired Comey NOW because of Comey's statements yesterday about the Huma emails to Anthony Weiner. THIS WAY it appears I fired Comey not out of my OWN self-interest but to appear as though he put Huma/Hillary in a bad light. Hehehe.
Trump wanted to fire Comey from day one, but simply waited for a moment to do it where it appears as though he was coming to the defense of someone on the left and not HIMSELF.

It is incorrect that the FBI director is given an automatic 10 year term.
The FBI director is term limited to a maximum of 10 years in office.
Congress passed this law after J Edger Hoover died after and after he abused his investigative powers to assume a job for life and intimidate Presidents, Congressional members and Judges.
