“...Moualem said that what Syrian Kurds were doing against the jihadist group was “legitimate” at this stage and fell within the framework of preserving Syrian unity, Reuters reported.”

Emphasis: “at this stage”

The Kurds were given autonomy by Assad only so long as they didn’t actively participate in the civil war (fight Assad).

There is an old Kurdish proverb: “No friends but the mountains”.

“No friends but the mountains”

Yes, it still resonates with them. The Syrian Kurds are a unique group. They have done a great job of unifying the mixed local groups. ISIS animals have shaken a lot of the borders between local elements. I’ve seen a lot of spontaneous quotes by those who were liberated from ISIS. Pretty amazing stuff. Like “Never again”, but amplified.

They are politically far to the left of me. But I truly respect and like them. And that has grown into some excellent friendships over the past 3 years since Kobane.

I plan on being here until this is over. If I live that long. smile.
