Superb administrative exercise of authority - Charles James Napier

On sati

Napier opposed sati. This was the custom of burning a widow alive on the funeral pyre of her husband. Sati was rare in Sindh during the time Napier stayed in this region. Napier judged that the immolation was motivated by profits for the priests, and when told of an actual Sati about to take place, he informed those involved that he would stop the sacrifice. The priests complained to him that this was a customary religious rite, and that customs of a nation should be respected. As recounted by his brother William, he replied:

"Be it so. This burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pile (pyre). But my nation has also a custom. When men burn women alive we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets (gallows) on which to hang all concerned when the widow is consumed. Let us all act according to national customs."

The sheer genius of this response and the concept it establishes that whoever has the overriding control (militarily) sets policy is awesome! Such is established by God. When the Democrats were in control, it is because God decided such, for it says so in Romans 13:1-7:

Romans 13:1 Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.
Romans 13:2 Therefore he who resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.
Romans 13:3 For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same;
Romans 13:4 for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath upon the one who practices evil.
Romans 13:5 Wherefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience' sake.
Romans 13:6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.
Romans 13:7 Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

Equally, that applies to the government now that we have a different leader. And, if people continue to oppose that rightfully installed leader, he should take steps to stamp out that resistance, no matter where it comes from. The media needs to be brought under control. And, all other sources of resistance must be quelled including judges, governors, city leaders, organized resistors of any kind (BLM, etc.), etc. to put an end to this idea that those who don't like the government in place have a right to undermine it in any way possible.

Napier made some other good points during his tenure in India:

The best way to quiet a country is a good thrashing, followed by great kindness afterwards. Even the wildest chaps are thus tamed.

The human mind is never better disposed to gratitude and attachment than when softened by fear.

And, this one:

So perverse is mankind that every nationality prefers to be misgoverned by its own people than to be well ruled by another.

It is the last item that is of most interest. I have traveled the world extensively and have seen that very thing. A given nation of people seems to prefer being abused and mistreated by one of their own than to have an outsider treat them more kindly.

Such explains why Memphis (#1), San Francisco, Pittsburg, Phildelphia, Chicago, Houston, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Detroit, France, Turkey, Mexico, Haiti, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Bangladesh, Most of Africa and some other places I have forgotten to mention are hell holes.

So be it.

“Be it so. This Resistance to a legitimately elected government is your custom; prepare your protests and seditions. But my conservative people have also a custom. When people commit sedition in front of God and everybody we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets (gallows) on which to hang all concerned when your seditious protests and treasons are concluded. Let us all act according to national customs.”
