Here's An Easy Way For Trump To Cut The Cost Of Government
Forbes ^ | May 6, 2017 | George Leef

The age-old problem of government is that the people in power (monarchs or elected representatives, it makes no difference) will try to use some of the money they collect in taxes to benefit their friends and supporters. One of the tactics used widely in the U.S. is for politicians to dictate that on a construction project, the winning bidder will have to sign on to a union-favoring Project Labor Agreement (PLA).

Instead of just having to complete the work according to plans, schedule, and other requirements in the contract specifications however, a PLA compels the contractors to agree to a host of other terms that are so onerous to non-union contractors that in effect the job is reserved for companies that are unionized. Since only 14 percent of American construction workers are union members, when politicians impose a PLA, they are discriminating against a pretty large segment of the workforce.

Mandating a PLA is a way for politicians to reward their union supporters by stifling competition that would lead to lower costs. The added expense is borne by the taxpayers, very few of whom notice that government construction projects are eating up more of their dollars than need be. On the other hand, the unions know perfectly well that PLAs secure them lucrative contracts; they will turn around and use some of their dues money to make sure their friends stay in office and come up with more projects for them.

Get rid of the SFGE plus all welfare programs. Fire the VA and send all combat disabled vets to private MD’s. The VA was not started for other then combat wounded.

The author doesn’t seem to realize that construction and manufacturing unions are with Trump now. Why would Trump hurt his supporters? The only unions he should be fighting are public sector unions.

It would be nice to have a list of some of them "onerous" stipulations that are easier for union companies to fill out.

Seems like real penalties for substandard/overdue work and not allowing massive overruns - if they bid it, they need to use real projections instead of going low to get the job then "discovering" issues that will quadruple the cost and date of delivery.

There is no easy way to cut the cost of government. Too many freebees to too many people. Few, is any are willing to bite the bullet and ‘suck it up’, even for a short time and that includes Congress and the governments as well.

Not only that, but the Congress should pass a federal civil right pursuant to the 14th’s “poi” clause to mandate States be neutral on the matter of labor, recognizing the right to work as well as the right of collective bargaining be the choice of the employee, and even the employer.

(”Right to Work” is actually the moderate position, as it still allows unions rather than disallowing them altogether)

Bring about an end to all state support of union shops including in how they, the States, take bids etc.

The VA was not started for other then combat wounded.

Better re-check your sources.

The new agency was responsible for medical services for war veterans; disability compensation and allowances for World War I veterans; life insurance; bonus certificates; retirement payments for emergency officers; Army and Navy pensions; and retirement payments for civilian employees.

In 1976 you could not get into a VA hospital unless you were CAT 1 and you were seriously disabled as per the VA. That was 50% or more disabled. If less you got little or nothing. I saw the drunks and fakes in the winter.
